External HD Enclosure - recognition?

I have an Inspiron 8200 (Windows XP) and docking station.  I bought a Speeze 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure that also has a firewire connection and I inserted a Seagate 80GB HD.  I connected it with the USB and the computer will not recognize it.  The Seagate install software cannot find the drive.  The enclosure came with a Windows 98 driver only; it also came with a firewire connector, but the plug is too big for the 1394 opening on the side of the laptop.

Any suggestions?  I could try to format the HD on a PC first, but I doubt that will help.....

Have you tried it on another machine to make sure its not a faulty enclosure or drive?

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion.  I took the unit up to my trusty Dell Dimension R350 (a bit souped up), plugged it into a USB 2.0 port (PCI), XP recognized it, and I used the Seagate installation CD to prep the Seagate drive.  I came back to my laptop/docking station, and it recognized the external unitw/o any further set up.  I dunno what happened, but I am not futzing with it.  Thank you.

USing the firewire connection the drive will perform about 20% better than the USB 2.0 connection. To use firewire you need a 6 to 4 pin cable or converter
