e6510 fn key

Hello,

My Issue:  The "Fn" key on my e6510 is no longer working. It is as if it is not being pressed. I have used compressed air, cleaned, etc..  No luck.

I tried to search this forum for posts on this subject, but every search (no matter what for) returns "Error retrieving documents." - so it seems the dell forum search is not working.   Using google, I did see a number of suggestions to re-install the quickset driver.  When I go to the drivers section for this exact model, there is no Quickset driver listed.  When I search drivers directly, there is a huge list of quickset versions but no way to easily find the one that I should be using. I checked a number of them (one by one seems to be the only way) and none were for my laptop.

There have also been suggestions to check the bios. I saw no option in the bios for Fn key functionality and it seems like an unlikely suspect- as I have not been in the bios (other than to look into this issue).

If somebody can offer a suggestion or a link, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

 Matt

Hi Matt,

I request you to check the FN key status in BIOS. To go to BIOS, restart the system and at Dell logo tap the F2 key every two seconds. Once in the BIOS screen navigate to ‘Post Behavior’ and highlight ‘Fn key Emulation’. Once it is highlighted, in the right pane check if ‘Enable Fn key Emulation’ is checked. If not, check the option. Click ‘Apply’ and then click ‘Exit’ to exit from BIOS.

Now check if the FN is responding and reply with the status.

Hi Sujantha,

Thank you for the reply.  I checked that.  Fn was on already, so I turned it off, saved, then turned it back on, just to be sure it set properly.  Still no Fn functionality.  If you have a link to the proper quickset driver for a Latitude E6510, I could try that.

 Thanks,

   Matt

Hi Matt,

Thank you for the update.  Once the system at the desktop, press ‘Windows’ + ‘X’ key on the keyboard which will launch ‘Windows Mobility Centre’ as shows in the picture below:

Change the Function key row from multimedia key to Fn key behavior.  Before performing this step ensure the Fn key is enabled in BIOS.

Revert for further assistance.

Hello,

Thank you for the response.  As noted,  the Fn key is correctly turned on in the BIOS.  Using Win-X,  There is no "function key row" option. There is no "DELL Customized by Dell Inc." section.  I only have the upper section.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thank you for all the trouble shooting steps tried. You may try installing the quick set application from the link given below:

Let me know the status.  In case the Fn is still not working, I suspect the Fn key is faulty.

Please click on the link below to check the warranty of the system. In case the system is under warranty, send me a private message with the system service tag to assist you further.  Please click on my name and click Start Conversation to send me a private message.

I also tried the one listed for "Latitude X1",  same message.   When I search that site for e6510 specifically, there are only 10 items on the entire site, of which only two are Dell specific, and none are quickset.  Searching for Latitude and Quickset returns the same 30 pages your link does.

Thanks again-  Matt

by-the-way;  I did try the x300 driver,  and it does link back to a Dell ftp (ftp.us.dell.com/.../R130907.EXE).  But that driver is not compatible with my computer.   It says "This is not a supported system. Setup cannot complete".

Hello,

The link you have provided does not appear to have a quickset driver for the e6510... or if it does, it is buried in the 30 pages the link leads to. The first item in the list is quickset, but it is for an "x300", whatever that is.  Are you saying to use that driver?

It seems very odd that I would be provided a link to some 3rd party non-Dell site to find the driver for my Dell laptop.  Are you saying that Dell does not have its own driver on its own site?  The site you gave me is loaded with advertisements and looks very questionable.  How can Dell not have it's own driver?

I believe the unit is under warranty, but I don't believe the button is physically defective. I think you are correct about the quickset driver (which is what I have been looking and asking for as of my initial post).

Thanks,

    Matt

Okay- so a little more searching turns up that there is no Quick set application for the E6510.  It is a little surprising I had to find this out myself so longer after my initial post asked about it - and it explains why the link you gave me does not lead anywhere.   I installed the quick set alternative (Dell Control Point), which did result in the Win-X function showing Fn key options, but still did not resolve the issue.   I did confirm I still have warranty and have emailed support directly.

Thanks for your help.  I would not mark this thread as answered, but it can be closed.
