DISPLAY PROBLEM BACKLIGHT NOT FUNCTIONING

HI

I HAVE A VOSTRO 1500 LAPTOP WITH WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION SP3, RECENTLY REBOOTED  ADDED ALL DRIVERS AND EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE INSTALLED CORRECTLY. REASON FOR REBOOTING WAS BECAUSE THE SCREEN WAS DIM ALL THE TIME THE BACKLIGHT DIDNT SEEM TO BE FUNCTIONING SO I REBOOTED AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AT REINSTALLING THE DRIVER AND CHIPSETS AND THE PROBLEM WAS NOT RESOLVED. ONCE I REBOOTED MY SCREEN STILL WAS DIM U CAN SEE EVERYTHING ON THE SCREEN JUST ITS NOT LIT. TRIED CHANGING THE BRIGHTNESS LEVEL AND IT DIDNT WORK, ITS CONNECTED ON POWER. DID THE PSA AND EVERYTHING PASSED OPENED THE HINGE COVER AND PRESSED DOWN ON LCD CABLE AND RESTARTED COMPUTER AND STILL DIM. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN I RESTART THE COMPUTER THAT ITS LIT WHEN ON THE DELL LOGO START UP BUT THEN GOES BACK TO DIM. ALSO IN SYSTEM INFORMATION UNDER COMPONENTS AND UNDER DISPLAY ONE OF THE DRIVERS SHOWS THAT THE RESOLUTION, BITS/PIXELS, COLOR PLANES, AND COLOR TABLE ENTRIES ARE ALL NOT AVAILABLE. SOMEONE PLEASE HELPPPPP!!!!!

Yes an external monitor does display a good image...is there a way of knowing if its the inverter card or the backlight is the culprit, don't want to waste my time and money on something that might not solve the problem.

First, don't type in all  caps - it's considered shouting.

If the internal display is dim, does an external monitor display a good image?  If so, the backlight or inverter - more probably the former - is faulty.

An LCD repair shop can tell you and repair either for about $100.  If the screen is dim and not completely black, it's more likely the bulb, not the inverter.
