Any suggestions on buying a new mini netbook?

I'm in the market to buy one of the new mini netbook and would like some suggestions.  I'm tired of carrying around my large laptop and would like something smaller.

I don't play games, but I do sometimes download videos and music from the internet, and I do like to watch DVDs on my laptop, as well as listen to CDs, as well as save work to CDs and DVDs..  I want good internet access, definitely wifi, and I use my computer for word processing, too.  Most of all I need to be able to save my work to CDs and DVDs, so I need a CD/DVD writer drive.

My laptop and desktop both have Windows XP, Microsoft Word and Word Perfect.  Extra programs include Family Tree Maker, a genealogy porgram, and Kepler astrology program.

Anyone have experience with the new minis?  Any suggestions?  Any comments are welcome.  Thanks a lot.

Three red flags here that suggest buying a notebook, not a netbook:

1.  Videos on netbooks are not particularly great - the Atom CPU and video chipset do not do well with video.

2.  The screen is too small to do much serious word processing.

3.  You need the CD/DVD writer -- by the time you carry the external you'd need for a netbook, you may as well ...

Buy a standard notebook - a 14" unit is probably best.  If you're willing to spend a bit more and live with a smaller screen in return for a smaller chassis, consider a 13.3 notebook.

You will NOT be happy with ANY netbook for those applications you've mentioned.  Buy a notebook -- not a mini netbook.

I've owned a Mini 10 and now have a Mini 12.  The sound on the Mini 12 is very poor.  Very low volume.  The mini 10 was not much better.  Last week I purchased one of the new Studio 14Zs and it is a fantastic notebook.  Great sound and video.  Very fast.  The first thing I did was install Windows 7 (7232) and it runs great.

If you plan to view any videos or listen to music, I do not recommend a Mini.  Go with a light notebook like the 14z.

Thanks to both of you.  A notebook it is.  I'll check the Studio 14Z since I haven't studied them (it doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, so that won't do.  Don't want the external drive.).  I have considered the 13+ screens, so yes, I think both of you have given me wise advise.

Very grateful for taking the time to respond to my questions.  Thanks so much.

Thank you.  I think your advice about the external drive swayed me faster than anything.  I have an external floppy drive for my present very large laptop (17") and know it adds weight and takes up space.  New notebook it is.  Thanks so much.

Please tell me there is a FIX for the low volume on the Mini 10.  I don't want to send it back.  Has the TV Tuner and everything!  Please help!  Thanks!
