'ac power adapter type cannot be determined'

hi all,

i have inspiron 6000, about 2 years old. for last several days, i was occasionally getting a pop -up message on plugging in my power cord which reads:

"The ac power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65w ac adapter or higher for best system operation"

And yet it would charge the battery. However today it is not charging the battery whatsoever. Needless to say, the power cord/adapter are same as before.

Does it mean a battery problem or some issue with the jack in the back, or the power cord and how to figure it out.

Please advice,

Thanks

You can try another adapter, but most times this problem is one with the jack, not the adapter.

I am having the same exact problem right now. Whenever i try to restart the my inspiron 6400, i get that same message before windows boots up. With the computer plugged into the the ac adapter, the computer runs, but the battery will not charge. The thing that stinks is that my warranty just expired not too long ago. Were you able to fix the problem, and if so, what did you do? Thanks. Ed

Again - try another adapter. If that doesn't work, you have two options: have a shop that can do the work, solder in a new jack ($150 or so), or use the other option (replace the mainboard, $400-500 or so).
