65 watt vs. 90 watt AC Adapter with 600M

About a week ago, the AC Adapter for my 600M stopped working - it would not power the laptop, and the green LED on the adapter itself would no longer turn on. I called Dell, and they quickly sent me a new AC Adapter - it is a 90 watt unit. My original is a 65 watt unit.

The 90 watt until will power the laptop, but I get the "unknown power supply" message at startup and it will not charge the battery.

I have called 3 more times, requesting a 65 watt adapter. Each time, I get another 90 watt. I now have 4 of them sitting here.

Should these work with my 600M? From searching the posts, it appears they should - but perhaps they are not compatible with my 48watthour battery? Or is something else the matter here?

I really don't know what to do at this point. I called tech support again today and they have promised to send a 65 watt AC Adapter but since I already have 4 of the "wrong" ones I'm not holding out too much hope...

I have flashed to the latest bios, and my battery is now at 0%, if that info helps.

I started having the same problem with my adapter not charging my battery about 2 weeks ago. The batter will charge in my docking station, but not with my 65w adapter. I have also received an "unknown power supply" message at startup. I know another 600m owner and will try swapping his batter and adapter this weekend to see if I can isolate the problem.

I think the problem started after the battery overheated. My guess is the batter is damaged. I read in the manual that the battery has a shut off on AC charge if it gets to hot. I will only call Dell as a last resort. Dell's tech service is a joke.

In the end, Dell ended up replacing the mainboard in my 600M. That solved the problem. The orginal power supply was dead as well. My original battery seems fine.

I found out that it should work with either the 65 watt or 90 watt power supply. The reason I kept getting that message seemed to be related to something wrong with the mainboard.

I am on my 2nd motherboard in 4 months. I told Dell that I had a lemon and wanted a replacement, but they said they would not until the motherboard or screen was replaced three times.  We have 2 other 600m's at my work which have not had any problems.

Thank you for the info. Good luck.
