An adapter such as this from Cable Matters is required. Make sure you get HDMI to DP and be careful as most of the adapters go from DP to HDMI and are not bi-directional.

Yes, you can typically connect a laptop's HDMI output to a monitor's DisplayPort (DP) input using the appropriate cable or adapter. Here's how to do it:

  1. Check Your Laptop and Monitor Ports: First, make sure your laptop has an HDMI output and your monitor has a DisplayPort input. These are the most common video connection types on modern laptops and monitors, but it's essential to confirm.

  2. Acquire the Right Cable or Adapter: To connect HDMI to DisplayPort, you will need an HDMI-to-DisplayPort adapter or cable. These adapters are usually bidirectional, allowing you to connect HDMI devices to DisplayPort inputs. You can purchase one from an electronics store or online.

  3. Power Off Devices: Before connecting anything, power off both your laptop and your monitor.

  4. Connect the Cable or Adapter: Plug one end of the HDMI cable into your laptop's HDMI output port or the HDMI side of the adapter. Then, plug the other end into the DisplayPort input on your monitor.

  5. Power On the Devices: Turn on your monitor and set it to the correct input source (usually DisplayPort). Next, turn on your laptop.

  6. Configure Display Settings (if necessary): In most cases, your laptop should automatically detect the external monitor and extend the display or mirror it. However, if it doesn't, you may need to adjust the display settings in your laptop's operating system. On Windows, right-click on the desktop, select "Display settings," and configure the multiple displays option. On macOS, go to "System Preferences" > "Displays" and adjust the arrangement or mirroring settings.

  7. Check for Resolution and Refresh Rate: After connecting, verify that the monitor is running at the desired resolution and refresh rate. You can adjust these settings in your laptop's display settings.

  8. Audio (if necessary): If your HDMI signal carries audio, you should hear sound through the monitor's built-in speakers or connected speakers. If not, you may need to select the monitor as the audio output device in your laptop's sound settings.

Keep in mind that HDMI and DisplayPort are not directly compatible in terms of signal types, so you'll need an active adapter or cable to make this connection. Additionally, while HDMI supports video and audio, not all adapters or cables will carry audio, so you may need to use a separate audio connection in some cases.

Also, ensure that your laptop's graphics card and operating system support the desired resolution and refresh rate for your monitor, as this can affect the quality of the display.
