Interal microphone "unplugged" and not working on Dell Inspiron 14 7440 running newest ubuntu desktop

The internal microphone doesn't work on my Dell Inspiron 14 7440 running ubuntu, though it is recognized on windows and I remember it working before I reinstalled the ubuntu system. When I open sound settings, the app doesn't recognize the internal microphone. Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/0XjM3wr.png

I ran alsamixer (newest version) in the terminal and didn't see the internal microphone, this is what it looked like: https://i.imgur.com/R2IsDMJ.png

I also looked at pavucontrol and the app shows the internal microphone as "unplugged": https://i.imgur.com/W2UDMEi.png

How can I get the microphone working?

It could be that the 7440 hardware is not compatible with Ubuntu.  Check this knowledgebase to see any valuable information to resolve issue  https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000131655/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-on-your-dell-pc

@Chino de Oro It should be compatible. The microphone used to work until I reinstalled ubuntu.

Exactly the reason for my comment.  The hardware (microphone) was working with Windows operating system.  But it does not work with Ubuntu.  Meaning Ubuntu lacks of support for your system hardware.

This is a known issue reported by many Dell XPS laptops owners, microphone not working, speakers only work on one side with Linux.  Not all Dell systems are supported with Ubuntu operating system.  The linked article may shed some light from Dell installation process and for you to go over yours for comparison.

@Chino de Oro No, I mean it works for ubuntu before I messed up something else and decided to reinstall the ubuntu system.

Edit: I just flashed the ubuntu desktop image (same version as the one running on this computer) into a USB drive and booted up from that drive, the internal microphone can be found in settings: https://i.imgur.com/yjN0EaT.png, so it's probably not the newest version removing the microphone support.

I see.  Then run it against Canonical site for support models to confirm.

@Chino de Oro The model I'm using (dell inspiron 14 7440) isn't listed there. On my first installation of ubuntu the system can detect the microphone, and the microphone worked, but after reinstalling the system and installing some other apps I realized that the microphone stopped working. Could it be some other software interfering with the microphone driver?

Difficult to tell.  Although, many of Inspiron are compatible with 20.04 LTS  https://ubuntu.com/certified/laptops?q=&limit=212&release=20.04%20LTS&

@Chino de Oro I also posted this problem in lemmy's linuxhardware forum and this comment: https://sh.itjust.works/comment/12657257 suggests me press F4 after entering alsamixer (the app says F4 does "capture" but I don't know what that means). I did that and this is what I saw in the alsamixer interface: https://imgur.com/eFyQUY5.png. 3 devices in the middle all have the word "mic" in their names. Does this provide any clue to what was wrong and how I should fix the microphone?
