Inspiron 7501, use two M.2 2280 SSD together?

Dear All

I have just bought a new Inspiron 7501. I comes with a 512BG 2230 size M.2 SSD. I have also add a Intel 1TB 660p QLC PCIe NVMe SSD by myself to expand the space. It runs smooth.

I realized that it just come with a Windows 10 Home Edition. I would like to use Win 10 Pro. To avoid disturbing the original 512GB SSD configuration (as there are many hidden partitions), I planned to replace the factory default 512BG 2230 size M.2 SSD with a new M.2 SSD

However according to the service manual of Inspiron 7501:

=======================

Your Inspiron 7501 supports one of the following storage configurations:

  • One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
  • One M.2 2230 solid-state drive and one M.2 2280 solid-state drive

And below is the supported storage type.

Storage type Interface type Capacity

M.2 2230 solid-state drive PCIe Gen3 NVMe 256GB or 512GB

M.2 2280 solid-state drive PCIe Gen3 NVMe 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB

M.2 2280, PCIe QLC NVMe, solid-state drive PCIe Gen3 NVMe 512GB

M.2 2280 Intel Optane storage PCIe Gen3 NVMe 512GB

==========================

Is it possible to use two M.2 2280 at the same time? I have read the service manual, both SSD slots supports 2280 size SSD. So why the system can only support 2230 + 2280 but not two 2280 size SSD? Is that just because they have never test this configuration?

If two 2280 SSD is possible, what is the size combination? I have already got a Intel 660p 1TB, can I buy one more 1TB? Is 1TB + 1TB supported? Or shall I follow the factory default to use a 512GB + 1TB combination?

Thank you

1. Is it possible to use two M.2 2280 at the same time?
* It can support only one M.2 2230 SSD and one M.2 2280 SSD.

2, I have read the service manual, both SSD slots suppots 2280 size SSD. So why the system can only support 2230 + 2280 but not two 2280 size SSD? Is that just because they have never test this configuration?
* It does not support two M.2 2280 SSD drive.

3. If 2 2280 SSD is possible, what is the size combination? I have already got a Intel 660p 1TB, can I buy one more 1TB? Is 1TB + 1TB supported? Or shall I follow the factory default to use a 512GB + 1TB combination?
* It can support only one M.2 2230 SSD and one M.2 2280 SSD.

* You could replace the 2230 SSD and insert 2280 SSD. You could reinstall the operating system onto the new SSD. To check if the camera is compatible with Windows Hello, you could follow the instructions in the article here =

Hello, thanks for the previous reply as it answered my question too. I would also like to add one M.2 2280 solid-state drive PCIe Gen3 NVMe 1TB to my current set up which came with 512GB 2230 SSD but I wonder if it will not invalidate my warranty? I only bought my DELL in Aug 2020. Many thanks

Dell only copy and paste their manual. They don't do real test.

I am able to install 2 2280 form factor m2 1TB ssd in the laptop. they works well.

I did not format the factory default ssd. I install another new Windows in the SSD.

Hello, thanks for answering the question I was wondering if there is an M.2 Slot available in the Dell Inspiron 15 7501 or I have to replace the current 512gb ssd in it? I was also wondering if any m.2 ssd will work and what is the maximum size?

How to find out if my Laptop originally came with a 2280 SSD or 2230?

I want to know because I am planning to install a second SSD. So I am confused which one to buy 2280 or 2230.

Simply remove the base cover and check.

Its meant to be determined from the https://dl.dell.com/content/manual29399501-inspiron-7501-setup-and-specifications.pdf?language=en-us&ps=true table 10 storage spec. But the over lap between the 256 and 512G drives makes it impossible to tell without opening the back plate and taking a look as they can be either 2230 or 2280.

But for the 1 or 2T drives they will be 2280's as per the doc and in my system which is 1T i can confirm that this is the case having opened it and looked inside. Its a 2280.

I also noticed that the slot 2 did not have a cover / heat sink that goes over the additional SSD and it also did not even have a screw? Just something to keep in mind specially if you are going to add a 2230 size drive the cover/sick + the screw is a must... I noticed also that the ssd slot 2 mounting screw is the same size as the screws which hold on the back cover of the laptop.

Hi i also tried to add a 2nd 1TB M.2 2280 to me 2020 inspirion 15, It did work it took the drive and disk manager picked it up however when i did power intensive things the laptop would blue screen with an error suggesting that there was not enough power... It was the 1st time the laptop ever blue screened and with the 2280 SSD In slot 2 is did so every 20min or so until i took it out.

The Documentation could be clearer but i believe the restriction with running 2 1tb 2280 is power and possibly heat related. Which is a petty as the 2230 SSD the documentation suggests are much more expensive.

However, i wanted to mention mention my experience and recommend to follow the upgrade documentation.

Thanks
