Inspiron 15z 5523 beeps help!

Hello,

Well I got this laptop for almost 6 years now.

It's Inspiron 15 5523.

Today when I powered on the laptop, I heard continuously 5 beeps.

What does this mean please?

I heard it's something related to CMOS battery.

Can you fill me in with the details please and what is the risk?

@AmgedIsmail

If you feel uncomfortable unscrewing one screw then please do take it to a store/shop for the evaluation and repair.

Welcome to the Dell Community @AmgedIsmail

Try reseating the memory first!!!

Thanks but I'm not into using screwdriver and opening and closing the laptop.
So should I take it to a store who can do the opening of the laptop?
So what if reseating memory didn't solve the issue?

Oh so the RAM is just at the back of the laptop so it is easy for me to unscrew the cover and reseat the memory right?

What if reseating it didn't solve these beeps? It's CMOS battery issue?

I'm very worried as I also read on some sites that the Main board needs to be replaced.

They are 5 beeps. I tried to go into BIOS when I restart laptop, I can't even find the hardware check utility there.

5 beeps and stops then 5 beeps again and so on.

Sorry @AmgedIsmail  I thought it was 4 beeps.

That would indicate the CMOS battery.

See if you would feel comfortable enough to replace it your self???

Replace the reserve battery with a new one.  Be sure you disconnect the AC adapter and the main battery first.

Then power up.  If the error ceases, you're set.

If it does not, you'll know it's the clock chip that has failed - for that, yes - the mainboard needs replacement.

Batteries aren't lifetime devices - used or not, they age, and when they do the voltage drops, apparently enough to trip the status circuit here.  If the main battery is dead, the CMOS battery will be depleted faster, though.

Since these aren't rechargeable batteries, AC power should have no effect on them.

What is the reserve battery?

The CMOS battery? That round one?

Which batteries you mean that aren't rechargeable?

The CMOS batteries?

I'm curious since you can charge the main battery..

Yes the main battery I think it started to have drain problem two years ago.

Well, suppose the main battery is dead and causes the CMOS battery to be depleted faster, when I replace the CMOS with a new one, how long do you think it might take to start failing like the old one?

The reserve/CMOS battery is not rechargeable.

It's a CR-2032 button cell/example:

https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-CR2032-Lithium-Battery-ECR2032/dp/B004W5PDGK

If the main battery is dead/depleted, then the CMOS battery will be drained faster.

Even with a dead main battery, you'll likely get at least a couple of years out of a replacement reserve battery.

Can you tell me what is the cause of this Coin Cell battery (CMOS) to fail?

Can electricity sudden shut down in the house cause this?

I also always use the battery while connecting the AC power.

When I turn off laptop, I don't unplug the AC, should I unplug the AC after shutting down the laptop?

Thank you very much. That's very helpful.

So is there a specific CMOS battery type for my laptop or just any CMOS battery should work like the example you showed me on Amazon?

But I hope it's the CMOS that will solve the issue if replaced not the main board?

Finally, there is no need to reseat the memory right now right?

See above.  CR-2032.

The error has nothing to do with RAM.  Replace the battery -- it should solve the problem.  If not, it's the clock chip that's bad.

That would mean replacing the system board.

The man has reseated the memory. He cleaned it. When he turned on the laptop, the beeps sound remained but when he restarted the laptop, the beeps sound has gone.

I doubt that he reduced the volume level of this beeps or made it silent so I don't hear it?

I'm just wondering does this beeps sound have volume level or can you even make it silent?

Why hasn't anyone replied to me?!

Today, I turned on the laptop and the 5 beeps are back again.

I switched places with the two 4GB RAMs and pressed the RESET button and the beeps are gone.

So, the problem might be with the CMOS battery?

But why when I replaced places with the RAMs or reseated them, the beeps are gone and then comes again in another turn on the next day?

What does RAM have to do with the CMOS battery?
