Inspiron 5400 AIO 2230 ssd only no 2.5 hdd brackets

original configuration is m.2 ssd only

I opened it up to add a sata ssd but there is no caddy

Dell out of warranty support is adamant that since I did not order a sata ssd, no caddies are included or can be supplied as missing hardware.

it has to be purchased as part of upgrade

it is like buying a dell desktop with or without empty caddy included.  I have a hard time convincing support that the caddy ought to be included.  seems to be a gray area of what should or should not be included.

Can Dell mod connect me to a service representative to help me more?

See below, but before buying check the system internally -- I remember seeing that on at least one model in this line, the physical connector on the mainboard was not part of the system board -- just bare solder points. If that's the case, any 2.5" drive will need to be used externally -- you can't add the connector.

my mainboard has the sata connectors.  just no caddies to secure a 2.5 ssd.

Dell on line chat insists since I did not order a 2.5 ssd, the caddies are not missing.  hard to persuade it ought to be included.

They generally aren't -- and as I mentioned, it's becoming more and more common for models omitting certain options to be missing the connector as well.

I sigh.  will see if Dell mod can help escalate case.  small hope this would be resolved.  for those like me who do not have the hdd brackets.

3G5KF Dell Bracket HDD Left

M9WG5 Dell Bracket HDD Right

use a sticky tape to hold the ssd in place does not seem a permanent solution

they look different from the service manual, so I am not sure if Dell Chat made a mistake thinking I have 5490?

seems the manual is correct.  the bracket should have two wings to slide into the chassis.

It could be that the accessories are considered as optional depending on the product tier pricing.  Just took a look at some premium models of OptiPlex AIO and found that the HDD caddy was included regardless the system was not configured with a SATA HDD/SSD.  An example of the blue caddy in OptiPlex 7470 below.

If I would of installing a SATA SSD to the Inspiron 5400, apply a strip of double sided tape on the chassis (at the imprinted HDD) can be sufficient.  After inserting the SSD then pressed it down.
