Inspiron 3847, PSU upgrade
I'm looking to upgrade my gpu to a GTX 1060 6gb which means im also looking for a new psu. Will this psu work with my computer model? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071VFRB4T/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A38CVFTWPO1X4J&psc=1 The dimensions fit my case but im not sure about compatibility with my motherboard.

Most powerful card is based on fitting inside the case.
NON DELL cards will REQUIRE SECURE BOOT OFF and CSM ON with legacy option roms. Doesn't matter if we are talking NVIDIA or ATI. If its not a DELL card it wont post. If you have CLASS 3 UEFI bios there is no CSM.

You cannot use full length cards because the hard drives are blocking the end of the slots in the case.
Short Cards Like GTX 1060 work fine with standard EPS12v power supply.
So The GT1030 GTX 1050TI GTX 1060 from ZOTAC and Gigabyte etc for MINI ITX are fine.
Bare Minimum power supply is EVGA 700BR.

Also keep in mind that the B2 BQ G2 N1 W1 versions from the same vendor DO NOT WORK correctly because they lack power for the combined output on 3.3v/5v rails of 150W or more.

RM850x and similar are too long to fit in the case.

This forum post may help. But Mary G. has a point. The system is closing in on 6 years old and it may be dollars better spent on a new system rather than try to upgrade the 3847.

Power supplies are NOT single spec based on watts.
You need a unit with 150w combined output on the 3.3v/5v rails.
Choosing based on $$$$price will get a unit that will FRY your motherboard and everthing else in the case.
EVEN FROM THE SAME VENDOR there are units that work and units that do not.
EVGA 700B1 is bare miniumum. B1 is fine. B3 BR BT BQ G2 GQ models from same vendor ARE NOT OK.
There is a reason why a unit is $99 vs $49.

I have a question. What is the most powerful GPU that can be used on the Dell Inspiron 3847 5000rx-2000rtx series and what PSU will be compatible replacing a 300watt. The motherboard supports PCI E 16. @speedstep

Hi, I was wondering if a Corsair RM850x would be compatible with a Dell Inspiron 3847. I have hooked one up and when pressing the desktop power button I only hear a click. Upon plugging in the cables to the required plugins or whichever ones that i unplugged the old 300 watt PSU pins from. The only anomaly would be I used only half a six6 pin to plug into the P4 pin above the fan that provides a 12v to the CPU because the PSU didn’t come with one of those particular cords. Thanks

I just installed a gtx 1060 turbo in my dell inspiron 3847 last week my specs are 16gb ram gtx 1060 turbo and a 600w psu I'm using a i3 5.50 cpu waiting on my i7 to be delivered. All you have to do is remove the harddrive cage.

Yes. 3847 supports standard ATX 24/4 pin psu such as EVGA 600b.

Speedstep hasn't been on this forum in almost 2 years. It's not said what card you're powering. Very good chance the BQ will work, as it has the required power on the 3.3v/5v rails and the +5vsb rail.
