I want to add a second hard drive to my new 3880 Desktop System.

I have a new Inspiron 3880 Desktop and It came with the 220 GB of storage, however, I need much more than that for my photos and videos.  I want to purchase a larger hard drive to install.  Probably 1-2 TB.  I will use it for family photos and videos and then would like to transfer it to a new pc when we need one.

Can you make a recommendation pls?

Thank you

The 220 GB drive you mentioned is probably an NVME SSD in the M.2 slot on the motherboard.

The specs say:

One 3.5-inch hard-disk drive
SATA AHCI, up to 6 Gbps
Up to 2 TB*

*2 TB is probably the largest size HDD Dell tested, but you could install a larger one.

You could even get an 2.5" SATA SSD and use a tray adapter to fit in the 3.5" drive bay. For example, any of the 2.5" SATA SSDs offered here by Crucial are compatible with the Inspiron 3880.

Either way, go with a name brand drive, not some obscure brand. Look at cost per GB of storage, warranty, etc, and reviews of the specific drive you might want.

You'll need a SATA data cable for the new drive, and the power supply should have a free SATA power cable available. Instructions to install a SATA drive are in the Service Manual.

Your Inspiron 3880 supports one of the following storage configurations:

  • One 3.5-inch hard-disk drive
  • One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
  • One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive + One 3.5-inch hard-disk drive

Re: It came with the 220 GB of storage

you probably have 220GB M.2 ssd?  check your invoice or look inside your pc.

for example, this 3880 has a 2230 M.ssd but no hdd, so if yours looks like this you can add a 3.5 hdd and use it for storage of photo/video which can be transferred to new pc in the future as a data storage drive.  Dell-Inspirong-desktop-5-Techsourcesng

For some reason, that last post didn't like how I tried to indicate a D drive. and left the D out.  Then tried to edit and kept erroring out.

I had done something similar after purchasing my son's 3891.  I know that's newer than the 3880 here, but it is a similar box.  Luckily, for me, the box actually had an extra SATA cable already provided.  What I bought for it was a 3.5" 1 TB WD HDD.  Plugged in the free power connector, the already supplied SATA cable, attached it to the chassis as shown above, and done.

The thing you must remember is that the drive won't be immediately seen by the OS after the boot-up.  You have to initialize the drive in the Windows Disk Management applet - giving it the full partition.  Also, while not required as this won't be the boot disk, my suggestion is to select GPT partition type instead of MBR.

I'd also suggest remapping all the Docs, Pics, Video, Music and Download folders to your new secondary drive - which I'll assume you will give it the drive designation.

That's because emoji aren't allowed on this forum. D immediately followed by : is one of a number of character combinations interpreted as being HTML for an emoji. So whenever one of those combos is entered, the forum's software deletes it.

C: works but not D immediately followed by :. In future, you can spell out D drive or use D : with a space between D and :.
