dell inspiron adapter slot

I am trying for the first time, to put a SD card adapter in my computer. I see a slot in the front of the computer that looks like the adapter slot. I put it in but it does no go all the way in and I am not sure it is suppose to go in. When I put it in, a little white light flashes. Is this what it is supposed to do. If so where can I now find it on my desk top so I can see video from my security camera?
