Mounting Clones/BCVs on Win2K3 hosts

While this isn't purely an SE question, I suspect this might be the best place to find and answer.

We have several AIX hosts in our environment using SNAP, Clone, and BCV copies of file systems for various purposes. With AIX it seems fairly easy to manage the scripting of mounting and unmounting file systems when the copies are getting refreshed.

I need to do the same thing on a Win2K3 server now and can't seem to find any easy way to manage this in a script. I have to assume other people are doing this. Can you point me in the right direction to manage the mounting and unmounting in a command line script that can be tied in with the SE commands to refresh the copies?

i would stay away from mountvol as it will unmount with open handles to driver letter. you could use handle.exe from sysinternals to check for open handles each time before you unmount and if handles are detected do not proceed with the unmount. openhandles will leave stall OS cache and cause corruption, but that can be fixed usually by a reboot or quick chhdsk.

i would really recommend you to use SIU (symmetrix integration utilties) a.k.a symntctl.exe , this tool can mount, unmount, mask, unmask, siganture , etc... lots of other windows functions.. it used to have openhandle command but that was removed, you now have to use handle.exe like i mentioned above. but symntctl.exe unmount will check for openhandles and fail the unmount if it detects any, you just have to use handle.exe to see what the handle actually is.

SIU is part of TimeFinder Integration Modules and that is a product that must be purchased. SIU was made free long ago with version 3.7 but that version has major issues and no longer supported and SIU is not free any longer :)

Since S.E. commands will look exactly the same on Win, I'd dig a little the "mount" command .. that's obviously missing in Windows environments. But you can give "mountvol" a try ...

I have to admit I'm far from being a Window$ expert.. Thus I'd follow your advice :-)

Thanks Ben! SIU is exactly what I needed. While it is technically not available separately, the licensing for just the SIU components only requires Solutions Enabler Base license. My TX was able to find me a copy of SIU separate from TIM and we are ready to get going with this.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
