How to get datacenter jobs??

Hi,I am nikhil, a IT graduate and i have completed  courses on oracle,Networking, storage foundation( emc ) and storage network design( emc).I have posted a lot of questions and  have always got a very good response. Thank U EMC community.. Wel, this one is my personal question,i'm sorry for that, but your advice will be greately helpful.

My dream is to work in a datacenter, but will i be able to get any storage jobs with my above qualifications or  are there any other courses which can increase my chances of getting a storage job??? I'm a fresher and most of the datacenters are looking for experienced ones( in storage). How can we get experience without getting a job????

Nikhil, I can't tell where in the world you are from, but I think you are pointing out an age-old problem. You can't get a job without experience, but you can't get experience without a job! It was the same way when I graduated from college. I was lucky enough to have worked in a technical internship during college, which is a great way to get experience.

If you live in a big city in the US, another way to get great way to get technical experience is to volunteer for a non-profit, although this probably won't give you any specific storage experience. But you can get experience with applications, hosts, and networks this way.

How about the rest of you? How did you find yourself working in the storage industry?

There is no easy answer to your question, but I am sure that a lot of people have a similar one. Getting a data center job is competitive in today's economic climate, but making yourself attractive and well-skilled to the potential employers is important. Do certifications matter?  I think that yes, demonstrating your level of skill in a particular field is important, and the data supports that.

I would recommend a good recent article (actually a press release) by Foote partners that talks about the technical job market in great detail. As it turns out, several of EMC's certifications are considered "hot". Link to article. (pdf)

Getting your EMC certification takes time, but for many it has definately been worth it.

Other comments?

Hi Nikhil,

I think that you are already a good way there. You are an IT graduate and you have completed several good courses. You do not mention certifications, although I understand that you have completetd EMC foundation (ISM ?). If you have not got the ISM certification, then I would definately buy the book and study for the test. When you have an IT job, then, even though it may not be in the datacentre, it should be easier to see potential routes into the datacentre; if that makes sense. I started as a programmer sitting at a desk, but I was writing code that would be running in the datacentre, and so that eventually got me into the datacentre. It _might_ well have been a similar story if I had started life as a network admin, or as a sysadmin (becoming responsible for backup tapes etc). I think you have already set the foundations, keep studying and keep technical, and I think it can happen.

Also if you look at professional organizations (I am not sure where you are located), for example in the UK we have the BCS, British Computer Society. If you become a member of an organization such as this, then they often have special interest groups (for example specific Datacenter and Data Management groups). Also, if not already, become familiar with www.snia.org - great training materials and podcasts and whitepapers here.

Best regards.

Hi Richard,

Your advice has given me a bit of breathing place.Sorry for not being specific about my certifications..Its EMC's STF(level 1) & SDM(Level 2, as they name them).Today I just Went through an article listing top IT certificates which included some EMC proven professional certificates as well. What is the criteria for doing  "EMC proven professional Storage Architect" course? Is it open for all ? if so, I would be glad to know more about it.

Thank you

I saw this post by one of EMC's corporate bloggers and thought about your question. The post talks about all the IT experience a backup administrator gets.

We promote the EMC Proven Professional certification based on the overwhelming evidence that digital data will continue to grow at exponential rates. In addition, research conducted among IT managers over the past three years has indicated a need for storage knowledgable professionals. EMC Proven Professional certification provides a means to validate a candidate's storage knowledge. White papers containing details of these studies are available on

http://education.emc.com

Certification Magazine's recent salary surveys, including 2008, has indicated in recent years that among several IT professions, storage salaries are comparatively higher.

We highlight this combination of factors when encouraging students to consider how information storage and management will make them a more well-rounded IT professional. While no degree or certification guarantees a job, increased knowledge and objective validation of that knowledge can give candidates a competitive edge.

All,

Getting certified and getting a good job.. there are two different stuffs. To get certified, it need a good preparation and .. of course.. some hands on experience. After getting certified.. you may get some offer. But, here the the job profile matters a lot. After finishing my masters, I wan into a different technology and domain. After a couple of years, I joined Wipro And got a chance to work on EMC storage. From that day.. my life changed. I enjoyed & learned EMC technology a lot. After that I have switched couple of companies to get into a good profile. So.. I believe LUCK also matters ..

When it comes to Training & Education... I believe..EMC is best.
