PS6110 and PS6210 hardware compatibility questions

Hi all,

Could someone confirm if all controllers are swapable between PS6110 and PS6210 chassis?

I have a PS6210 with type15 controllers and a PS6110 with type 14 controllers and I want to know if it would work if I swap them.

I also see  some models combines SSD and SAS disks but I want to confirm If I can do it with every chassis and controllers or That models have an specific board to permit different disks types.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

You can't swap out controllers AND keep your data and configuration.  You must back up your data, reset the array.  Swap out both controllers and reconfigure the array.

re: Hybrid.  It's more of a firmware limitation.  I believe it's around the 8.x firmware level that hybrid were supported.  Also, the number of SSD vs SAS drives is fixed based on the chassis slots.

As a reminder you can't use OEM or non EQL drives.  Other Dell drives won't either. I.e. from PowerEdge, PowerValut or CML.

But why do you want to swap them?   I don't understand what benefit you hope to gain. I could see upgrading the 6110 with new 6210 Type 15 controllers.  Faster, more NICs and cache.

 Regards,

Don

Hello,

re: SAS and SSD.  You can't create unique volumes or RAID levels when you mix SSD and SAS.  There is only one RAID level supported RAID-6-Accelerated.  Which creates a RAID6 from the SSDs and another for the SAS.  Internal code pushes new writes to the SSD first then later are balanced over to the SAS.  You can create volumes that just reside on the SSDs. also you can only have 7x SSDs on those chassis.  Only the 6610 allows for more SSDs mixed with SAS drives.

So, if you intent was otherwise, you might want to rethink swapping out controllers.  An alternative is to replace all the 6110 drives with SSDs.  The large bottleneck is the backend drives.

Do you have SANHQ installed?   That will help you determine where you bottlenecks were.

You usually run out of "disk" before you overrun the controller.

.What are you planning on connecting to these arrays?

Also the firmware should be 10.0.3.

 Regards,

Thank you so much for your quick answer and the advice about compatibility for non EQL drives, I know I can only use drives with EQL firmware. The PS6110 is 24LFF 4U chassis and PS6210 is 24SFF 2U chassis so we prefer working with cheaper 3,5" drives. The data doesn't matter, the chassis are now empty so I want to install some SAS and SSD disks for different purposes.

Hi Don,

SSDs would store virtual machines and the SAS drivers for additional storage with less I/O requirements.

Hello,

Just so it's clear.  If you mix SSDs and SAS in same member, you will not be able to select the SSDs as  VM storage.  It is a hybrid of the two.   If you want selectable SSD storage then all the slots must be SSD drives    The other member would be all SAS drives.  There can be only one RAID policy per physical member.

Don

@dwilliam62 When mixing SSD and HDD, can the SSD be placed in any slot ? I have an PS6210 configuration with 17 SAS HDD and 7 SSD HDD. The RAID configuration is RAID 6 Accelerated but in the GUI all the SAS HDD are indicated are online, except one that is spare BUT the SSD HDDs are all displayed as spare, is that normal ?

I placed all the SAS HDD from slot 1 to 17 and the SSDs from slot 18 to 24.

Thanks in advance for your help
