Disk Xtender

Hello,

I currently have a customer in remote facility who is using the Disk Xtender platform to archive to Centera.  Unfortunately i'm unfamiliar with the software and was wondering if there is anyone out there with enough expertise to point me in the right direction.

The customer has stated that his console is showing 7k purged files and 4.5k deleted files.  I'm wondering if anyone can give context around what the system is referring to and what the difference would be between purged and deleted files.

I'm doubtful this product is still under support, so i don't think calling into our support folks is going to get this customer very far.  By chance are there any up-to-date documents i should be looking for?  most of what i can find out there seems to be dated.

Any information or contacts anyone has would be very helpful.

Hi Steven -

Deleted files are just what they sound like.

'Purged files' is the term DX uses when it has archived the data contents of a file to Centera and leaves a 'stub' on the host extended drive - these stubs can be seen with Windows explorer as having a small 'clock' marker on their icon, indicating an offline file.  When the user accesses a purged/offline file, DX transparently 're-hydrates' it on the extended drive before the data is returned to the user who requested to open the file.

Hope this helps.

Hey Mike,

This is very helpful, thank you!

As far as the deleted files go.  I assume this is a deletion done either by an end user or Application(customer is running Fuji PACs in the env)?

You're welcome

I would assume the deletes would be the result of user or application action. I believe it's  possible to define a DX policy  (policies are how files get selected for actions such as purge) that would auto-delete content that met certain criteria, but I have never seen a customer who had something like that running in production.

I'm surprised that a Fuji PACS app has only 7k purged files. Usually it's in the 10's of millions!

If the end customer is interested in moving this content off of DX/Centera and onto a NAS device such as VNX or Isilon my company is an EMC partner providing services in exactly this area (data on Centera moving to NAS).  We have completed several Fuji/DX migrations and can provide references. I second  If the site stays down for a while, you could also use a live image that has GParted in the repos, and give it persistent storage.
