XPS 8700, bottom slot is wired only for PCIe x1, NOT PCIe x4
Looking at the PDF manual the board shows 4 slots, a PCIe x16, 2 PCIe x1, and a PCIe x4, but the key to that diagram indicates that the x4 slot is really a x1. So, is it really a full function 4 lane x4 slot or perhaps the manual is correct and it only functions as a 1 lane x1 slot. Does anyone know for sure or is there a way I can check this out? I am looking to add eSata and/or firewire 800 and the card I like needs x4.

Well that totally, but thanks cause I was about to order a eSATA/Firewire 800 card for that slot and that would have far worse. So much for this being a "performance" computer...

Owner's Manual page 14 specifically states that slot 24 is "PCI-Express x1 card slot". This means wired for x1.
The specifications PDF, Expansion Bus page calls it PCI-Express x4 because it is the fourth slot down from the first PCI-Express x16 slot.
Any other reference to that slot being x4 is meant to say it is the fourth slot down.
1. PCI-Express x16 card slot (PCI-EX16_1) First and only x16
2. PCI-Express x1 card slot (PCI-EX1_1) First x1
3. PCI-Express x1 card slot (PCI-EX1_2) Second x1
4. PCI-Express x1 card slot (PCI-EX1_4) Third x1 but fourth slot

Dell XPS 8700 comes with a one PCIe x4 slot on the systemboard. You can refer to picture below for it.

Yup, it looks like an x4 but in the Dell Owner's Manual it labels it as a PCI-Express x1 card slot, just like the two x1 sized slots.

Yes, and then on page 14 it indicates that the slot that looks like an x4 (labeled 24) is an x1. So is the manual incorrect and this slot is actually a fully functioning 4 lane x4 slot or is the manual correct and this slot functions as an x1 slot even though it is the size of an x4 slot? I can't understand why y'all keep pointing me to the picture of the board when my original question pointed out that the picture of the board shows an x4 slot but the caption indicates it is an x1!

The Information labeled at 24 is wrong. I will escalate it to the concerned team for the correction. But again confirm you the port is PCIe x4 slot on the systemboard.

Hi! Can I replace the original graphic card of dell xps 8700 for a NVIDIA Gtx 970 4Gb Gddr5 .. Didnt told me if it has the PCI express port and i've my doubts of spent so much money on this computer. Anybody can help me!! Please

You can but like my OCZ revo 3 it will run at 1x. Dell ended up giving me a refund because I bought it for this 4x port and I would t accept my $500 card running at 1/4 speed.

Does the slot length mean something. I just spent $500 on the Kingston 480 Predator that requires a x4

The XPS 8700 doe's not have a X4 PCIe slot. now I have to get rid of a Kingston Hyper X Predator
