What Programme to Use to Transfer everything from an old Dell to a New Dell Desktop
Hi,
As the title suggests, we are about to replace my Wife's ageing Inspiron i3 Desktop with one of the new XPS 8930 - the version with the GTX 1070 card. Ideally, we want to transfer all Applications files etc. quickly & seamlessly from the old Desktop to the new one (But use the Windows 10 Home that comes with the XPS, not transfer that as well). In chat, the Dell representative said Dell no longer offers a transfer app, so is there a Third Party application that anyone here would recommend? Does not have to be free - happy to pay within reason

+1 to what SpeedStep has said.
You can transfer "user" data - e.g. photos, music, wordprocessor files, etc. Easiest way is with a USB Flash drive.

There is no transfer of Applications. There is no compatibility with Old Apps and Windows 10.
This is not happening ever.

When i transfer from old to new i do it one of two ways 1. copy everything i can to an usb 2tb drive, or i use a cross over cable connected between the machines via the network port. 99 percent ot the time i have to find new versions of the software i was using because the new os does not support one or more functions of the old version.
Hope this helps , the usb drive can be used for other things after the files transfered. You will have to find the apps and download or install from cd / dvd again on new machine.

In the future, consider keeping personal files/data on external drives or on a cloud drive. Then, the only thing you have to worry about is installing applications.

Hi everyone, and thanks for the answers. I should have made clear that we are already running Windows 10 on the old Inspiron i3 - Win 10 was never tested & sanctioned for this machine by Dell, but has run perfectly fine for years now. So there is no problem with cross-compatibility between the OS, & thus the apps. All personal files & data are already backed up on two separate drives.

It doesnt matter if both machines have the same operating system - there is generally no way to copy installed programs from one machine to another. You have to install the programs manually.
If the programs are ones that require a licence such as Microsoft Office then you will need to move the licence from th eold machine to the new one. Often this involves uninstalling the program from the old machine and reinstalling on the new machine and re-entering your licence key.
