Setup speaker on Dell XPS-8500
I purchased a new Dell XPS-8500 without knowing there is no built-in speaker. I have tried to plug on my own old speakers but none of them worked. Do I need to purchase speacial speaker from Dell? What could be the problem? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I plugged in the green port. Do you mean I need to download something to make it work? Thanks for your quick suggestion.

Hi pine lake,
Are you connecting the speakers to the green port? Also ensure that the audio drivers are installed. Please find the link below for the same.

Hi pine lake,
After installing the Audio drivers the device manager should look like the attached picture below. Open ‘Device Manager’ by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type ‘Device Manager’, and then, in the list of results, click ‘Device Manager’.
Also check the Audio settings in Dell Audio. Click Start > All Programs > click Dell Audio > Dell Audio by Realtek to launch the utility.

I followed your instrcution to download the provided program and failed. The message is like the following:
Realtek ALC889 Audio Driver V6.0.1.662(AOO) Jaunary 18, 2013
FAILED
A problem occured installing this update package
View Log ... OK
I clicked on View Log and didn't understand those codes.
What could be the problem?
Again, thanks for your help.

Just out of curious -- where you download your audio driver? Are you sure your XPS 8500 ship with Realtek ALC889 ?
Well, because I got my XPS 8500 at early April this year and apparently the Realtek Audio Component on the motherboard is ALC887. ( I also check the same system on US site -- since I'm from Taiwan -- and they seem to use the same ALC887 audio component )
I would recommend you go to tech support page of your system from DELL website ( if you haven't already ), enter your service code and go to driver download section. The version show up to me is Realtek High-Definition Audio Driver 6.0.1.6537,A00 (for Windows 7 x64) or 6.0.1.6662, A00(for Windows 8 x64), both has released date around March 13, 2013.
By the way, my XPS8500 audio jack is working out of box since received (from back panel, I do hook up my headphone to front audio jack and it works fine as well), although getting microphone jack on front panel to work take a little extra bit work on the setting -- lesson taken, using "Dell Audio" instead of basic Windows Audio mixer, that would cause less hassle.

Quite a coincidence. I'm a Taiwanese, too. This is my name in kanji 謝牧正. But I believe I'm much older. I was a typical college graduate in 60's anxious to leave the harsh environment for higher education in the U.S. and eventually have settled here in Michigan.
I got my XPS 8500 in Feb. but don't know the Realtek #. I clicked the download site from your suggestion. I'll check every thing you mentioned today to see what went wrong.
By the way where you live? Assuming in the States. Let's have more communication. Thanks again.
Moozen Sye (I have unusual phonic translation on my last name. Yes it is 謝.)

You might be able to install the generic Realtek HD audio driver straight from the Realtek site.
I have an XPS 8500 motherboard installed in a Cooler Master N200 case, and with the machine now booting, I'll be configuring it later tonight.
