Precision T3600 sees drive on HDD0 port but Win10 install doesn't see it, not does diskpart - after messing with UEFI

I'm trying to install WIN10 to a blank hard drive. BIOS lists the hard drive correctly in boot options. During Windows 10 installation, I get the infamous "We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click Load driver".  DISKPART fails to list the hard drive.  Curiously, this happens when the hard drive is connected to the blue 'HDD0' port on the motherboard. It also happens on HDD1, HDD2, and HDD3. But, if I move the cable to 'SATA0', everything works just fine.

In the recent past, my old installation of Windows 7 had been running fine on another hard drive connected to the blue HDD0 port.

As I prepared to replace the old hard drive and install WIN10, I started poking around with UEFI, whereas as everything prior had been 'legacy'. I soon abandoned UEFI and decided to just keep it simple with legacy HDD boot settings in BIOS. This is the point at which things became weird. My guess is that either I physically damaged those HDD ports [0-3], or their is some sort of lingering UEFI configuration that is interfering.

I've loaded and applied the BIOS defaults on multiple iterations now. I've also removed the coin battery for 48 hours. I've also tried the 'hard reset' by holding in the power button for 15 seconds.  BIOS has been updated to v15 (the latest). The results are the same with 3 different hard drives.

The built-in diagnostics report "Msg: Hard Drive - No Hard Drive detected, or disk controller not supported."....which is hard to reconcile with the fact that the drive is listed in the BIOS boot device management, as well as BIOS->System Configuration -> Drives, even on HDD0.

The hard drive controller does not appear to have any RAID options, unlike many other Precision workstations. So I don't think it's related to RAID. The results are the same with multiple cables.

Should I 1) keep looking at UEFI as a source of trouble? 2) install/run with the hard drive on 'SATA1' physical port?, 3) install a hard drive controller in a slot and run from there? Thanks!

The PERC Raid Controller has F6 Mass Storage Drivers that are NOT Native to windows.  You cannot "see" drives without Drivers.  You also cannot point to an exe file on floppy or usb flash drive. It must be extracted and on the media before being pointed to.

Drives must be formatted VIA CTRL N RAID BIOS if on the PERC.

The mass storage driver is tricky.  The dell site does not list the actual PERC F6 driver but rather the raid application.

The 3600 5600 7600 drivers download support page should be updated to include the information below.

HDD ports 0-4 on this board WILL activate if the PERC H310 card is removed and a device is connected to at least one of the HDD0-4 ports.

The storage controller activated appears to be the integrated Intel C600 chipset 4 port SAS/SATA controller, with PCI ID 8086:1d6b.

This chipset is documented to support SATA III speeds and TRIM but both are untested at this time.

When two or more drives are connected, the BIOS option ROM screen is enabled for "Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology enterprise", with configuration utility available by typing Ctrl-I during boot. SCU Option ROM is version 3.2.0.1022.

When one drive is connected, the option ROM setup will not appear but the controller still functions normally.

When no drives are connected at startup, the controller will not be activated.

All ports 0-4 are activated and usable simultaneously in this configuration.

'"Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware" installation error on a Windows 7-based or a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer'.External Link

This is not cookie cutter you must extract the drivers and point to them on a USB storage device unzipped.  EXE OR ZIP is not F6 READABLE.

  1. Go to another computer that has an internet connection and click the link below to download the PERC driver for your hard disk drive (either 32-bit or 64-bit):
  2. Save the downloaded driver to a DVD or USB flash drive or an external hard drive that can be taken to the PC that you're installing Windows to.  Its an exe rename it .zip and extract the 4 files.
  3. Next, start the installation of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and watch for the Load Driver option. You will see this option on the Where do you want to install Windows? screen in the lower right corner.
  4. Connect the USB flash or external drive to the computerthat you're installing Windows or take the Windows DVD out of the drive and put the driver DVD into the drive. (You will put the Windows DVD back into that drive after the driver is loaded)
  5. Click Load Driver, (clicking this option checks removable media for storage controller drivers)
  6. Once the driver is loaded, continue with the Windows setup.

The Advanced Drive Format hard drive will be recognized and Setup will continue as expected.

Rename this EXE to PERC.ZIP

then extract the 4 FILES to diskette or USB flash drive and F6  point to them.  In windows 7 you "load drivers" from usb flash drive.

Thanks for the resources. I don't have a PERC controller or any other add-in controller and my problem was solved at this thread: en.community.dell.com/.../21039188
