keyboard shift key working improperly

the shift key on my dimesnsion 4400 will not work. what can i do

Try swapping the keyboard for another one to make sure it is the keyboard at fault.  If it is and the keyboard is under warranty then contact Dell for a replacement. Otherwise a new keyboard is relatively inexpensive.

Since the other user has a different computer model and didn't state whether they tried another keyboard it would be difficult at this point to say the problem is related to a defective PS/2 port.  Can you post the link for that diagnostic utility?  Thanks!

I am so sorry to hear others have had this problem with the keyboard, I was hoping mine was a fluke! Same issue with a new 4600 for my son, enter key, num lock, etc. Dealing with customer service is a MAJOR NIGHTMARE. Now they have sent me a link to download a diagnostic tool, saying it is probably the PS2 port on the motherboard. I have a new computer from them on order for my business, I am considering refusing the delivery if this seems to be a problem with their systems....

Here is the response I got:

If the other keyboard is also not working, then I think the problem
is with the motherboard port. * Go here https://support.dell.com/register.aspx
to set your Service Tag HOME Page
* If listed, click Home and Home Office
* Under "Alternative Sign In", type in your Service Tag number
[press Enter]
* Click the tab or button Downloads
* Under "Search Keywords or Filename", type CD108310.exe [press
Enter]
* Download the file to your desktop, when done, double-click
the file
* Follow the instructions to create the floppy disks
* When done, re-insert disk #1 into the floppy disk drive
* Insert zip or cds into any available drives
* Click Start- Shutdown- Restart- OK or Click Start- Turn Off
Computer- Restart
* Once in the diagnostic program, choose Quickly Test All Devices.
What are the results?

 

I haven't tried it yet, hope we all get some resolution!
