Hi TLH18,

Welcome to the Dell Community.
I understand that you have  purchased a hard drive  and would like to install the OS.

1. We need to ensure that the hard drive is detected by the computer. In order to do that.

  • Reboot PC
  • When the Dell Splash screen appears, press "F2" key 2-3 times.
  • A BIOS Utility Screen will appear(see picture below)
  • Please navigate  in this utility by using these keystrokes
Expand and Collapse Field.................................  or  left- and right-arrow keys or  <+>/<–>
Select Field to change........................................
Change a setting.................................................. Left- and right-arrow keys
Cancel modification............................................
Reset Defaults......................................................  or  Load Defaults menu option
Exit BIOS................................................................  – Remain in Setup, Save/Exit, Discard/Exit
  • Please select the "Drives" option and press Enter
  • Select "Diskette Drive" and press Enter
  • Select the option "Off" by using the left or right arrow key  and press Enter
  • Select SATA 0  or PATA 0 (depends upon what hard drive  has been installed; SATA or IDE) and check if it is enabled or disabled. If disabled ( Off), please enable it (Select On) and press Enter
 -
  • Exit BIOS by pressing "Esc" and Select "Save/Exit".
  • Please try to install OS after following these steps.
Please reply for further queries.

Make sure both the data and power cables are plugged in. I've made the mistake in the past of not connecting one and then wondering why they device doesn't show up.

Thank you for the response.

I would request you to go to BIOS setup utility by pressing F2 on Dell Splash Screen and check Drives. Please look for drive details on this screen and check if there is anything displayed next to DRIVE ID and CAPACITY.

Please let me know if the hard drive that you have purchased is a SATA or an IDE hard drive.

If it is an IDE drive, you could connect the hard drive to the secondary port on the IDE ribbon cable that is used for DVD drive.

The system has 2 SATA ports, you could also try to connect the hard drive on the  2nd SATA port.

As you see in this diagram, there are 2 SATA port connector, please try to  connect the hard drive  on the second SATA port and check in

BIOS whether it is detected or not

Please try these steps and let me know of the outcome

You should be able to boot from the Windows installation DVD and install Windows, which will allow you to boot from the drive.

when i try to install the windows DVD from the DVD drive andrestart the machine it comes up no boot device available. so then I restarted and hit F12 it says selected boot device not available

Please try to change the boot sequence in BIOS and make the CD drive 1st boot priority, In order  to do that , please  go to Boot Sequence in BIOS(F2 )  and then select CD drive  and press "U" key to bring it at the top and then save the changes and try to reboot from OS cd

my system is dell optiplex 755. the original hard disk went out. so I bought a western digital WD3200AAKS.
I had tried install xp, came up a blue screen with error code: 0x0000007B. my problem is: tap F2 won't go to
BIOS, it came up  with "floppy deskette seek failure" in stead.   any way i can get in BIOS setting?

Hi ivanfeng,

Try tapping the F8 key repeatedly at the Dell Logo on startup. If it gets you to the Advance boot menu it is possibly a failure with the motherboard/CMOS/BIOS. Follow the steps below for Clearing CMOS Settings:

  1. Power off the computer and disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet.
  2. Remove the computer cover.
  3. Locate the password (PSWD) and CMOS (RTC_RST) jumpers on the system board.
  4. The jumper locations on the small form factor, desktop, and mini-tower computers are shown in the images below:

  5. Remove the jumper plug from its pins.
  6. Place the password jumper plug on the RTC_RST pins and wait approximately 5 seconds.
  7. Remove the jumper plug from the RTC_RST pins and place it back on the password pins.
  8. Close the computer cover.
  9. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets and turn them on.

If you are not able to get to the Advance Boot Menu then the keyboard might be failing. Follow the steps below to ensure the USB keyboard is functional:

  1. Reseat the USB keyboard cable into the USB port and test the keyboard.
  2. Turn off the computer.
  3. Unplug any devices, including the following:
    1. Speakers
    2. Printers
    3. Scanners
    4. Other USB devices except the mouse
    5. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
    6. USB flash drive or other external storage devices
    7. Turn the computer back on and retest the keyboard.
    8. If the issue is still not fixed try the USB keyboard in another USB port on the computer.
    9. Try the USB Keyboard in another computer if available.
    10. Try another USB keyboard from another computer if available.

If you are using a Bluetooth/Wireless keyboard follow the steps below:

  1. Verify that the batteries are new and properly inserted and that the mouse and keyboard are powered on.
  2. Remove and reinsert the receiver.
  3. If you still experience connection issues, restart your computer.
  4. Press and release the Bluetooth® button on the mouse and receiver.
  5. Wait a minimum of 20 seconds.
  6. Press and release the Bluetooth button on the keyboard and receiver.

Do reply with results.
