Computer won't recognize USB devices

Recently when I plug in my already installed USB devices, my computer will not recognize them and I have to restart the computer to get it to recognize them. I have tried clearing the registry and the system devices of mention to the USB root hub, but that did nothing. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks

Thanks,

Peter

What Dell model do you have and what is the BIOS version?  Some Dell models have had BIOS updates released that correct USB related problems.  Possibly yours is one.

You still didn't list your Computer Model Number and Operating System.

However, if you have a memory manager added to a Windows XP system, that could be your entire problem.  A memory manager is not needed.

I used the configuration checker by Dell and it said I have A03 BIOS, I have tried to install a flash BIOS update, but it wouldn't work because an error message popped up saying I had installed memory managers and it wouldn't flash the BIOS chip. How do I resolve that error?

Thanks

The latest BIOS version for the Dimension L___r  model is A14.  Unfortunately when looking over the BIOS Update Release information I can find nothing that improved or fixed USB support in your model with BIOS versions A04 through A14.

The reason the BIOS upgrade did not work was that you were trying to run the upgrade from with-in Windows.  The BIOS upgrade must be run in a DOS environment without Windows running or running in the background.  Dell has a BIOS update version that will create it's own bootable BIOS upgrade disk and that file can be found here if you still wish to try a BIOS upgrade.  Just download the file to your hard drive and run it.  The program will prompt you into creating a bootable BIOS upgrade floppy disk so have a blank one available.  While the upgrade is performing don't turn the power off to your computer or do the upgrade when the weather outside might indicated a power outage.  An interrupted BIOS upgrade can trash your computer.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB in Windows Device Manager?   Possibly reinstalling the drivers will correct the problem you are experiencing.

Last time I just removed the USB root hub, but would it be OK to remove the Intel 82801AA Universal Host controller? I am afraid if I delete that I will have NO access to my USB devices ever again.

Thanks

Try reinstalling it from Windows Device Manager.  The hub uses the standard Windows driver so it is readily available on your system for the reinstall.

I hope this is the right place to post.  I am having the same sort of problem.  I am trying to hook up my Nokia Phone to the computer via a USB cable.

I have followed the instructions from Nokia, and even talked to their support on the phone.  I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled the driver multiple times.

I still get the following message in the device manager:   This device cannot start. (Code 10).

Nothing I do seems to rectify the problem.  Does anyone have any ideas?  I have a Dimension 8200 running XP.  It has a Pentium IV 2.2 processor. I am not sure what else you need to know about the computer.

Thanks in advance!!!!!
