Microsoft Edge fails to launch with VMware Carbon Black after March 8th 2021 updates

Microsoft Edge fails to open once it has updated to the 89.0.774.48 build released on March 8th, 2021 with VMware Carbon Black installed. This resulted in high CPU usage from RepMGR.exe, and multiple MSEdge.exe processes being spawned. This also resulted in an extremely high volume of events regarding msedge.exe launching msedge.exe processes.

A change to the method of hooking into Microsoft Edge was made by VMware to the Carbon Black application. This update is automatically pushed down through a VDF update on the March 9, 2021. Any exclusions that were previously set to work around this issue can be safely removed on all endpoints that have updated to the latest signatures from Carbon Black.

To validate the latest signatures for Carbon Black are in-place, reference How to Determine the Signature Version for VMware Carbon Black.
