Need to work out which tapes can be re-used

I'm looking for a report that tells me which tapes have data on them that Networker doesn't know about anymore, i.e. if there are no save sets that Networker is aware of on the tape, I need to remove it. I'm probably using the wrong terms, but hopefully that makes sense. Does DPA have such a report?

Hi brastedd,

From a NetWorker point of view, the save sets will always remain in the Media database unless the tape has been labeled even when it has exceeded the retention period.  NetWorker will mark these save sets as recyclable when it has exceeded its retention time and there are no dependencies on that save set.  What does happen though is when all save sets are recyclable, NetWorker will mark the tape as expired and can be overwritten when put back into the tape library.

From DPA (6.2.1) you can run a report that will list the 10 oldest Volumes which can be located under Media Management > Details > Recycle list.  This will only bring back the 10 oldest Volumes for you and does not necessarily advise that the tapes are expired.  You will need to check that the Expiry Flag column is set to "True" for that volume for it to be deemed expired.

From here you can then look at creating a custom report that you can only specify to list all volumes that have the Expiry Flag set to "True".  This will give you a report for all tapes that are expired and can be re-used within NetWorker.

Hope this helps.

DPA will use NW DB to collect data so DPA won't know more than NW does already.  Also, if you have data written to tape outside NW, NW nor DPA will know about it (unless this second application was already managed by DPA, but as you know it is recommended not to share tape volumes between different applications so I doubt this is your case).  As per NW alone, it will know which tapes to use and reuse by default and your don't need DPA for that - NW alone is enough.
