Need to upgrade to newer NX-OS, but which one?

Hi experts,

I'm running NX-OS 5.0(4) on a number of switches and I'm trying to figure out to what version I should be looking to upgrade. EMC now supports 5.2(6a), but Cisco is already at 5.2(8). What are your experiences with the latest versions?

The 504 I'm running now has a bug that core dumps are being made to RAM and when RAM is completely filled up, the switch reboots, so I desperately need to upgrade to something new and stable.

I suggest to refer to EMC's "Technical Advisory ETA emc300455 / Cisco Bug CSCua02159 - "Devices zoned by device alias lose connectivity after port flap or zone activate", first.

My personal suggestion is to upgrade to NX-OS 5.2(6a) or higher.

I know some production environments running NX-OS 5.2(6) / 5.2(6a) since Aug-12 without problems.

Today, I suggest to RPQ NX-OS 5.2(8) for a new deployment, having the need to connect to McDATA "Open Fabric Mode 1.0" switches to avoid from running into bug CSCuc35483.

I hope this will help...

Kind regards,

Swen

Hi,

Current EMC target releases are 5.0(7) and 5.2(1), so I recommend you to go to one of these ones (first we should check it bug you mentioned is fixed in any of them).

I have been running 5.2.2d for several months with no issues also.  But with that said I am upgrading my lab switches to 5.2.6a as there is a small issue with earlier releases concerning the device alias losing connectivity after a port flap or zone activate.  It is referenced in EMC300455.

Felipon, I'm seeing 5.2(6a) on the EMC site, so EMC must support it, so going to 5.2(1) makes no sense to me.

That's exactly what I was thinking about. So the 2d might be ok, but in some cases there are issues. The release notes mention a number of issues with (somewhat0 older codes, so I was aiming for the 6a or even the 8 anyway, except that the 5.2(8) isn't supported by EMC yet

Thanks, but I'm aiming for 5.2(6a) or the (8)

Hi RRR,

I may be a little bit exaggerated but I was one of the people who purchased a brand new Windows Me... if you know what I mean...

Since then, I do not trust in any software product that has not been in the market for less than a year. That is the reason why I recommend NX-OS 5.2.1, because It has been around for a while and I have not heard any complaints about it (moreover, it is the one recommended by EMC nowadays).

I am pretty sure that 5.2.6a will be good choice, but personally I prefer newer releases to be tested in live environments rather than in mine :-)

Kind regards,

Felipon

RRR,

I just upgraded our LAB switches to 5.2.6a.  So far no issues.  I am currently staging the software on our Production switches for a probable upgrade in Feb.

The plan is to test the code in the Lab first for a month then upgrade accordingly.

If your not wanting to go to 5.2.6a just yet, I would upgrade to 5.2.2d.  As I stated earlier, I have been on 5.2.2d for several months with no issues.
