How to determine the name of my Principal switch

Hi,

I am new to Cisco so need some help please.
I have been told that all my zoning should be done from Cisco Principal switches.

I have run
show fcdomain domain-list vsan xxx
and it shows me the domain list, the wwns for each switch and which is the principal switch. How ever how can I find out the actual name of the principal switch so that I can ssh to it to make the zoning changes.

Thanks in advance

It doesn't really matter from where you do your zoning as all zone content should be distributed to all other switches anyway. Make sure that you do a "copy run start" on all switches after each change to prevent some switches from not having all zoning info. If you miss one and all switches should go down, the most current zone content is distributed to all other switches anyway, but better be safe than sorry, I always say ;)

Use the show fcdomain domain-list vsan command to verify the local principal switch status:
switch# show fcdomain domain-list vsan 1
Per VSAN there's a principal switch, so if you have 20 VSAN's in use, you also have 20 principals. Switches can be principal for more than 1 VSAN....

I looked this up on: http://cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5989/products_installation_and_configuration_guides_list.html and http://cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/sw/nx-os/configuration/guides/fabric/fabric_cli_4_2_published/cli_fabric.html

I have sort of gone through that, but basically I just want the equiv of fabricshow with a name of the switch instead of the wwn

:D Brocade rules ! Hehehehe, no seriously, with Cisco you need to know all the tricks and tips and what levers to pull or push....

I'm sorry I can't help you any further with this. If you should find out the right command, please update this thread ;)

Another easy way to determine the principal switch is to use Fabric Manager...

Highlight the VSAN on the left and Select the "Switches Tab" on the right and this will tell you which swith is Principal....

The believe the easiest way of tracking it down is to trace the domain ID of the principle switch from the sh fcdomain domain-list command. Logon onto the other switches in the fabric and run sh fcdomain vsan x (x=vsan number). This should tell you the configured and running domain ID of the which you can then compare against your original domain-list output.

I usually have static domain ID's and include the domain ID as part of the switchname, so it is easy to track this sort of thing down.

sh switch wwn vsan x is also a useful command.

You may also be able to create a device alias for the switch wwn's which might make the output of domain-list more useful, but I have never tried this.

try "show fcs ie" and "show fcdomain domail-list" ,it give you similar output like brocade fabricshow

Hi,

With help of, 'show fcdomain domain-list', you can know the principal switches (their WWNs and Domain IDs) in VSANs, make a note of this information. Then look for, 'show fce ie', here you will get the WWN - Management IP Arddres relationship, using the IP address of the Principal switch you can now login/SSH in to it. Once you login you will have the switch logical name as the switch prompt. However to do zonning you need not be on the Principal switch, you can do so from any switch in that VSAN and the zonning information will be propogated to all the switches. Coming to your second question, there is no equivalent of the Brocade's fabricshow command in Cisco.
