Failover mode 1 to 4 ALUA is online activity?
Hi ,
We have VNX 7500 with one Storage Group contain multiple ESX host (ESX 4.0, ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.0)
In that we configured failover mode set 1. And now we asked to change the failover mode to 4 (ALUA).
Can anyone confirm the failover mode 1 to 4 ALUA is an online activity?
Or do we need ESX host reboot to get the setting effect. if Yes let me know its for all ESX / (ESX 4.0, ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.0)
And also confirm do we need a separate Storage Group for ESX4.0 and ESXi5.
Configuration
VNX 7500 (Block)
software ver: 5.31.000.5.704
Thanks in Advance.

changing ALUA requires host to be rebooted. The systems that are members of the same storage group , are they part of the same cluster ? If yes ..why so many different flavors of ESX in the same cluster ?

"Can I change failover settings online?"
NOTE: You must reboot the host after making the changes.
So it looks like you actually have to bring the server down, change the failover mode and then bring it back up.
What array are you using ?

In Unisphere, go to Hosts ..you will see under Wizards "Failover Wizard".
Here is a good paper on VNX and vSphere integration

Many thanks for the response.
Is there any doc for step by step procedure to perform Failover settings changes?
Yes, all ESX hosts (ESX 4.0, ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.0) in one group.
Because each ESX LUNs are presented to each ESX hosts (ESX 4.0, ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.0) that is the reason all ESX host are in one Group.
Kindly suggest me the best practices from EMC. Can I go for separate group for each flavor?

We are using VNX 7500 (Block) software ver: 5.31.000.5.704
The above solution is for VNX 7500?
