SCv3000 - Dual Interface

Is it possible to connect using 2 I/O methods simultaneously?

I have 2 Poweredge Servers which connect via SAS HBA located in same cabinet as the SCv3000

I want to connect additional Poweredge Server which is in a different Comms Room over LAN infrastructure.

Can I add Fibre Channel or iSCSI card to SCv3000 in addition to existing configuration?

Thanks

Hello G P Ashe,

SCv3000

A storage system with four front-end SAS ports on each storage controller can connect to up to four host servers, if each host server has one SAS HBA with two ports.

@Dell -Charles R , even with 2 ports left i have my doubt that he can reach his 2nd. server room assuming the max. sas cable length of 4m. At max. you can reach the next server cabinett but not more.

@G P Ashe , the SCv3000 have only one PCIe slot for cards and both, the SAS and FC frontend ports have to placed  there.  So SAS+FC together is not possible because lack of Slots.

If you have bought the SCv with the 10G Mez. Card (4x Onboard Ethernet) you can configure iSCSI Faultdomains there. But... we tried that short time ago and both together doesnt work well. We convert a SAS one to iSCSI (was planned from the beginning) and leave the SAS config in place and also connected to the vSphere ESXi Hosts but with no volumes mounted because all Data was moved to the new iSCSI Volumes.  Weeks later the SCv stops working and Dell Support says that iSCSI+SAS was not well supportet and we only should use one FrontEnd.

In the past we use FC+iSCSI on the SC8000 and Windows Server which works very well and it was possible to present one volume over 2 Frontends to the same Server.

Regards,
Joerg

Thanks - need to get Dell to clarify this . Your response is most helpful.

So basically - remove SAS and replace with either iSCSI or FC for both local (adjacent) servers as well as the remote ones. Where does that leave me with the existing datastores - do they remain intact?

Hi @G P Ashe,

Based on the user guide, there isn't any support configuration with 2 I/O methods.

Hello G P Ashe,

The data will still be accessible after controller change.

Run an updated support assist report to have in case anything happens and you need to work with Support.

It is recommended to contact Support to work with them through the process.

Shut down and replace both controllers.

Power up and configure controllers.

Thanks Charles - I tend to foget that we are paying for ProSupport so we should make better use of it!
