VNX5100 PPP connection error 777

Hello!

I just got a VNX5100 in which has a running system on it. I don't have the login information, and I found out to reset it I need to create a PPP dial up connection.

At first I tried to hook up my laptop to the service port. It responds to pings on 128.221.1.251 with netmask 255.255.255.248. Everything is green and I have used the unispere init tool which detect a running system with a name. Everything seems to be working on the box.

Now I have set up a PPP connection using a guide in this thread:

https://www.dell.com/community/VNX/VNX5100-Password-Reset/td-p/6998477

I also found a .doc file somewhere on the internet, which is describing it in the same way.

Basically make a new modem with the USB to serial connector that I have, in my case the COM port is COM5.

I have deleted and re-made the modem connection a few times to make sure I didn't miss anything, but every time it results in error 777. It does not tell me the username and password is wrong, just that it cannot connect because something is wrong on the remote computer.

The system has 15 1TB drives, and a label on top of the first 4. Since it's booting and I can get to the login screen using the service ethernet port I guess the box itself is working fine.

Then I was thinking it could be the serial cable I am using. I have a few where some of them don't have all the pins in the connector, but I also have some that has all the connectors. I have tried them all.

Part number of the cable that has all pins is 038-003-084.

I also have 038-003-084 which I right now realize is the exact same part number. This cable is brand new, black and is missing one connector inside the small connector for the VNX.

The first cable is grey and has all pins inside all connectors.

I also have a cable with part number 35-00000192, which is also missing a pin in the connector.

I have also tried a cable with part number 038-003-085, which I have two versions of. One version is black and only has 3 pins inside the connector, the last grey one is labeled with "SP A" and a battery logo, I'm guessing this is used for battery communication.

It ends up in an RJ45 connector, for which I have adapters which were used. Again error 777 during dial.

I am really at a loss now. Am I using wrong cables? The setup is done 100% step-by-step, maximum speed is 115200, created the modem as a connection between two computers, used COM5, removed dial number after creating, made sure boxes were ticked and unticked.

Can you disable this functionality in the VNX? Is that's what's going on? In that case how do I recover the system?

Thank you for all your inputs!

So I found out that connecting to the wrench icon isn't working. I thought for sure I had to use that, but switching to the battery icon and it gets to check the username and password.

I have tried:

clariion/clariion!

Administrator/clariion!

clarion1992/clarion1992

None work, but I get the error 628 now, where it says "The connection was terminated by the remote computer before it could be completed"

Sounds like it could be wrong login information. but I really don't know what else to try here.

Hi,

Thanks for your question. This thread has some additional default passwords to try https://dell.to/3TsXFx7. You may also want to try booting the control stations in single user mode.

Hello,

Thank you for your response.

These logins didn't work either, I am still getting error 628.

Running in single user mode didn't work for me either.

I can only assume the unit is faulty at this point. I'll see if I can return it. I got really tired of working with it at this point.

BR,

Jesper
