replacing disk form other storage array

Hello everyoe,

As the title suggests, i want to replace a faulted SATA II disk from my cx4-120 with another SATA II disk from VNX series. So one of my colleague asked if this is even possible to replace a disk from other storage as there could be different firmware written on the disks.

This actually looks a dumb question. Is firmware pre loaded to disks or it is written at the time the disks is inserted, by the array itself.??

drives in VNX have SAS interfaces, will not work in CX series. EMC drives are pre-formatted at the factory plus the specific version of firmware pre-loaded, Flare will not work with just any drives.

Hello ArslanaAli,

Welcome to EMC Community.

Without going into further technical details. Please reach your account team to raise RPQ as by default migrating harddrives from an array to another is not supported even if the drive will work which I suspect (VNX  drives has SAS interfaces)

Hope that helps

Thanx for the quick response guys..

i've informed the concerned department to order new drives that are compatible with  CX series.

As Dynamox said, there are a couple of more things you can check :

Only those drives will be supported on an array which have higher drive firmware than the ones which are already in a DAE you want to connect to. The other conflict is DAE & Flare Code. CX or AX DAEs are not supported in New VNX Series, the same has to be in reverse in case of drives. Clariion supports FC, SATA II & EFD. VNX supports SAS, NL-SAS & FLASH.
