AX4-5I SPS faulty?

I have an EMC AX4-5I DPE iSCSI storage device with x2 standby power supplies. The device has an error that displays “The storage system’s Standby Power Supplies (SPSs) are not working properly. (0x7404)”

Please see image for my current setup. The right SPS is the faulty one.

On the faulty SPS, the Replace battery and Fault LEDs are amber. The NaviSphere troubleshooting link says that if the Replace battery LED is amber to replace the battery and if the Fault LED is amber that the SPS has an internal problem. I can buy the SPS and replace it, but I was told by a third party EMC vendor that there may be an issue with the device itself and suggested getting an EMC certified tech to confirm if the SPS is faulty or not.

I have no issues with having a certified tech troubleshoot the issue, but they want to charge $700 for 3 hours of troubleshooting.

I am not a storage person so please pardon my simple questions.

  1. Should I get the SPS and replace it or have the tech troubleshoot?
  2. Do I really need two SPS? Can I disconnect the faulty SPS and connect directly to another power source? Maybe to the other SPS?

    3. In addition, is the AX4-5I good for VMs? Right now it’s being used for file storage, but I have three Hyper-V servers and was wondering if this SAN device would be a good candidate for clustering VMs.

Thank you.

Alex

1. If the fault LED is still amber after the reboot, you might have to replace it. For futher investigation, you should get the SPCollects then send it to someone (EMC support or EMC service partner/local reseller) for checking: How to run and gather SPCollects using Navisphere Express

2. Temporaily it is Ok (e.g. you plan to move all the data to another good array), but long time this will leave your array in danger.

3. It depends on your requirements on VM. BTW you can download the configuration guide on http://www.emc.com/microsites/clariion-support/ax45-install.htm

AX4 can work on single SPS also, but it will have its write cache disabled and hence will be slow. You can directly connect the source to the Storage Processor without having SPS. This will cause the SP to shutdown in case of source failure, which may cause SP failures.

My suggestion will be to try powering off the SPS and then powering up the same after 3-4 minutes. This may remove the faulty status from the SPS.

Hi, Recently we used to get some issues like, even after the SPS replacement main fault indication (amber LED on the SP) will remain the same and the alerts in the unisphere/navisphere also will remain. But the LEDs one the SPS will change to green. In that case you have to reboot both SP A and SP B one by one.

If you are getting the amber light on the SPS, you may go for the SPS replacement.
