Dell chromebook 3100 freezes and screen becomes pixelated

We have over a 1000 Dell 3100 chromebooks in our district. I have several that came from the same order at the fall of 2021 that are failing. They constantly freeze and students loose their work. I have tried every possible fix I could, short of replacing the mother board. They freeze up, screen becomes a bunch of boxes, or they power on with no display. We have used Dell chromebooks for over 10 years and never had this many failing devices. Any other districts having issues with Chromebooks?

We tried reaching you on a private message asking for the Service Tag number to ascertain the warranty but did not receive a response. Please feel free to reply to the private message whenever you are available.

Yes we are having the same issues here. I ordered 100 chromebooks and about 10 out of the 100 are having this issue. Is there anything that can be done for this? Did we find a fix?

I have been on the phone now for about 30 minutes trying to get this resolved. I have been told to email oop.na.commercial@dell.com

Going to try that seeing as there are MULTIPLE districts having this problem with the 3100 model.

They are now out of warranty. I have been working on Dell chromebooks for over 10 years and have never had a batch this horrible. Wondering if it was from mass production during the Covid crisis. Dell should have extended the warranty if they are failing at this rate. I have three more today.

All I have received back so far was that I could pay to extend our warranty. I am in touch with our regional manager through dell for our district now, hoping that Dell is not going to make us pay for a manufacturing issue. We will see.

I have a few 3100's that are having similar problems. The warranty ran out November, 2021. Mine are freezing and some have no display. I emailed them. Hoping for resolution without having to purchase extended warranty.

I have the same issue.  No one at Dell seems to be helping me.  I was told to email OOP.NA.COMMERCIAL@dell.com.  They did not help me.  They said  - We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that you have been facing with these units but would like to inform you that we are from Point Of Need (Out Of Warranty) Commercial Team and can only provide repairs / services on a chargeable basis. For any In Warranty Claims the request has to be routed to the Tech Support for individual units as they will not handle Bulk In Warranty Claims either.

Our school purchased a quantity of 550 Dell 3100 Chromebook’s in 2020.  They were delivered at the end of October in 2020.  During the first year, while they were under warranty, I probably had to send about 30+ into Dell all for the same issue.  The issue is they are freezing.   I mean any little bump or movement of the Chromebook, the whole screen gets pixilated and the Chromebook freezes. A hard reset fixes it until another movement of the Chromebook. When they were under warranty, I'd send them in and Dell would replace the system board.  After a system board replacement, they are fine.

Our warranty expired at the end October 2021 and since then I have 18 more that have this issue and had to take out of service and have no value to us.  I understand that we only purchased a 1 year warranty, however something seems to be going wrong with these.

I have narrowed down that the issue only happens with ones that say they were manufactured in 2020.  We have another order we placed (same Chromebook) that say manufactured in 2021 and we have no issues.

Something needs to be done by Dell.  Here is a video I made of the issue. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QtMA1ONQxX7_CDApG70Bdt9et7oLxerl/view

We are having the same problem we ordered about 430, before the warranty expired we probably sent 30 back to have dell repair. Now that the warranty has expired we have fixed over 50 with the same problem they will freeze and the screen will pixelate.

This is exactly what I have. But we are having issues with the HP Chromebooks at our High School as well. They are just out of warranty and failing at a rapid pace.

I can't believe Dell won't stand behind this issue. If they would send me motherboards I would install them.

We ordered 650 Dell Chromebook 3100's in fall 2020 and had similar MB issues on around 80 that were fixed under warranty.  In the past year, I have had to deprovision 130 of them because of bad MB's and out of warranty.   We contacted Dell and all they had to say was that we could purchase extended warranties at a reduced price and that MB failures were common.   If 1/3 failure is common within 2 years I'm not sure we should be purchasing Dell.

So as with the rest of you we are just calling it a loss. I hate to report this but now the HP Chromebooks that our high school purchased are doing close to the same thing. Only difference is they are also over heating. I'm thinking during Covid they just produced a bunch of junk.

We have the same issue with Dell 3100 Touchscreen chromebooks in our district. They are out of warranty and replacing the LCD cable or screen does not help. We have purchased over 750 of these chromebooks and we have at least 25 in the office that need new motherboards as a result of this.
