Chromebook Dell 3110 random shuts down

Chromebook 3110 2-in-1

Chromebook 3110 2-in-1

Hi all,

When I'm working on my Dell Chromeook 3110 2-in-1, sometimes it randomly shuts down, and says that the battery is empty. When I start it up again, it still has like 80% sometimes. It happens 2-3 times in a week, and its very annoying if your work is not saved

Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or experiences the same issue?

Greets, Fynn

We are having the same problem sporadically throughout our district.  It seems to only be 3110 and it's happening on non-touch and 2-in-1's.   It is not happening to all of them, but it seems to be happen to the people that have it happen repeatedly...  Like you said a few times a week.

Run a Computer Diagnostic

To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Preboot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics. For information about how to run Diagnostics, and to determine the issue, see Dell Knowledge Base Article How to Run a Preboot Diagnostic Test on a Dell Computer.

If the onboard diagnostics and other troubleshooting have not identified the root cause of the lock ups, you may want to consider running the Quick Test or Full Scan at Dell personal computer Diagnostics. You can Run a Dell Quick Test using SupportAssist.

james

Hi @kPoole

I have heard from someone that the problem is at google, but I'm not so sure about that.

I do not have a solution yet, but I'll let you know when its fixed!

Greetings, Fynn

Our school district has been having the same issue. Usually the red low battery icon shows on the black background screen right before it shuts down. When pressing the power button & the device powers back on, it shows 80% battery life, or more. Luckily we discovered this issue before our warranty expired.

My only solution is to send batches of the devices back to Dell for repair. All the devices I've sent so far have needed a Main Logic Board repair or replacement which leads me to believe 1. We cannot repair this malfunction on our own & 2. Dell knows they have a bad batch of motherboards. In my opinion, Dell is sitting back, waiting for the consumer to correct their issue & probably hoping people won't notice before their warranties expire.

Send them back while you still can & stress test ALL your devices that were sent in the faulty shipment. It's likely they will all experience the same issue after enough use. Good luck.

Our District also has 3110 2-in-1's and at least half (about 800) of the devices that we KNOW about are experiencing this issue.  I would not be surprised if they all did.  Regardless, the issue has been known and reported to Dell since product release and the lack of resolution with CBT midterms nearing is unacceptable.

We are seeing widespread reports of the issue you have described in our district. We purchased 15,000 of these in one order and took delivery over the Summer. I am very nervous about what this is going to mean in the next 5 months when our warranties start to expire.

We are experiencing this issue as well. So far, updating to Chrome OS 110.0.5481.32 by setting the update channel to the beta channel has resolved it on our test group. This version will eventually hit the stable channel and I'm hoping it will resolve the issue for most of us.

We are seeing similar issues in our district with our 3110s. It seems to happen when 2 Chromebooks are stacked on each other in the same direction. The screen will cut off. On ChromeOS 108 (and prior) versions it seems to cut the device completely off. After updating to ChromeOS 110 as suggested by @trogers6 it seems to just put the screen to sleep. Removing the device from being stacked will bring the screen back on.

@John harper thats imposible to do when it won't even power on. When we send our district chromebooks to Dell the repair sheet says "main logic board repaired". Any other suggestions? We are averaging about 10-15 weekly that we send off for repair. Any help would be fabulous!
