Chromebook 11 3180 will not turn on

I have a chromebook for personal use at home.  I've hard the motherboard (I think) repaired on it once already under the 1 yr. warranty because it would not hold a charge and randomly turn off.  It is now almost 2.5 years old and it suddenly will not turn on.  No issues with battery life or anything prior to this.  I was using it yesterday and battery was around 40-50% so I plugged it in on a shelf in the place I normally charge it, knowing I would need to use it quite a bit later.  When I got home and tried to turn it on 3 hours later it will not turn on.  There is no light on the chromebook, but the green light on the cord is still on.  I tried to charge it in a different outlet overnight and still no luck.  I have tried to do a hard reset several times (holding refresh and power button at same time).  Talked to Dell, since it is no longer under warranty I can mail it to them to diagnose and replace parts, but the prices quoted are probably more or very close to what I can buy a new one for.  Does anyone have any other suggestions I can try before I just give up and buy a different device (probably not Dell this time).

It is recommended that you go to the repair shop to check what is causing it. If you need to replace the parts, it will be cheaper to buy online.

Unplug the battery and the power cord. Then hold the power button for 30 seconds. After that plug the battery back in and give it a try.

This a common problem with the 3180 and is an easy fix.  Take the back cover off and unplug the battery.  Hold the power button on the keyboard down for 30 seconds.  Plug the battery back in and close the back cover.  Plug the power cord in.  The chromebook should power on without any issue.  I'd like to know what causes this but haven't figured it out yet.

Most likely the power protection system. The only question is why a hardware reset didn't work. I've seen this same general problem in hundreds of Chromebooks and hardware reset has worked on almost all of them.
