Code upgrade on Centera product.

We are planning to do a code upgrade on Centera.

Can anyone please list down the prerequisites required prior to performing the upgrade. Any precautions needed to be taken and if details step by step guide to do it would be very helpful.

I am aware that an EMC engg will help out while doing the upgrade however I would like to know the steps we need to take from our side.

Also can anyone please let me know if Lab is available for the same.

Hi Shweta

The EMC Engineer will perform his prechecks and if all is ok then he'll perform the upgrade.

from an admin point of view you'll have to pause replication during the upgrade resp. the engineer will do that. Just control your systems if they have resumed replication after the upgrade. I have had situations where the engineer didn't do that after the upgrade. Nothing really worrying but issue a show replication detail to make sure replication is running and no longer paused.

The engineer will put his files onto the machines and distribute across all nodes. We typically plan for an online upgrade in order not to disrupt the applications accessing Centera. This takes a little longer than an offline upgrade.

If you want us to check your systems prior or after the upgrade let me know.

Best regards, Holger

Hi Shweta

No, nothing else really to be done other than replication. I guess you backup your applications, configurations, databases and so on regularly anyway :-)

As the upgrade does not change anything that an application is concerned with like profiles or system identifiers, nothing needs to be changed on the application side. The SDK versions go back several years that are compatible with the latest CentraStar releases.

Go for an online upgrade and you should not remark anything from an application point of view.

Please feel free to send me an email at holger.jakob@informatio.ch any time. You can also have your systems monitored for free for a couple of months prior and after the upgrade. Go to www.informatio.ch and download the Centera Client. It has an installation guide in the zip file that describes what needs to be done. Then I need to know the serial numbers and the recipients from your organization who should receive the monitoring reports.

Best regards, Holger

Hi Holger,

Thank you for the reply.

Apart from replication do we have to take any backup of any file/s or configurations?

We are planning for an upgrade in next month, so I shall ping you once we have all the approvals in place to go ahead.

Hi Shweta

Assuming the systems has a valid service contract, please contact EMC customer service. There is a well described procedure for an online  CentraStar Upgrade, designed for no interruption of customers application and operation.
