How to move Production CIFS Server from 1 GIG to 10 GIG module on Same Datamover

Hi,

We recently added a new 10 GIG IO module to the additional slot available on each data mover. we already have 1 GIG IO MODULE that is in production ( 2+ 2 LACP Config). We need to move production from 1 GIG to 10 GIG on each Data mover.

In order to move all the work load to 10 Gig module , i need to delete the interface and re-create it on New IO Module. But Interface is tied a CIFS Server which is part of a domain. Looks like i need to unjoin the CIFS Server from AD and then delete the CIFS Server. and then delete interface.

Once done, i want to recreate the interface with same name and IP address on the new IO 10 gig Module. and recreate the CIFS Server with same IP and join it to same domain .

Once this is all done , do you think the users will be able to see all their shares and access via 10 GIG IO Module without any issues?

.

If you search on the Forums, there's a discussion about this operation.  Basically, you can create a temporary logical interface on the CIFS server, so that you can delete the active interface on the 1GbE module.  You can then (very quickly) delete the interface from the 1GbE port and recreate it on the 10GbE interface via the CLI.

These steps will allow you to move the interface without unjoin the CIFS server from the domain.

yes - if you can live with temp using a different IP for the clients

these days you may also need to create SPNs for clients that require the security

How do i know in our environment if we have to create the SPNs for Clients ?

Also , we are anticipating Downtime , so that we can uncheck the Active interface and delete the interface on 1 gig and recreate it on 10 Gig .

Hi,

I have atleast one IP address/interface that's not in use by any CIFS Server on each physical Datamover. As long as i have this interface , i can just the follow the process

1. Uncheck the IP address in use by CIFS Server

2. Delete the interface on I Gig N/w

3. Re-create the interface on 10 Gig N/w on Same PDM

4. Check the Interface back on CIFS Server.

During this process as long as i have one unused IP Address/ Interface on Each PDM , i should be good.

When i uncheck the IPaddress on the CIFS Server, i don't have to "check" the temporary IP Address right ?

If you're anticipating a downtime, I would still ceatea quick temporary interface - this just allows you to avoid having to delete the CIFS server.  If your clients are not expected to connect, this is the fastest, easiest way to make the move.  I've done this numerous times and can generally do it with less than two minutes, start to finish.

I always check the temporary IP address, just out of habit.  My CIFS servers aren't set to do DDNS, so they won't try to update their IP with the Domain Controller.  If you have DDNS updates enabled, you definitely don't want to check the temporary IP address.  Otherwise, you can leave the temporary interface unchecked.
