Add more disks Celerra NS120

Hello,

I'm worried because I have to add 5 disks more of 450G to one Celerra NS120 system storage to extend several file systems, but, first, I have to upgrade the storage pool.

I have never configured any of it, I have only worked with VNX system, so I have not found any documentation about how I have to proceed with the upgrade the system. In every discussion I always find the same link that doesn't work: http://corpusweb130.corp.emc.com/ns/common/post_install/Config_storage.htm

By now, I don't know which is the version of the Celerra, I don't know if the customer works with Navisphere or with Unisphere (it depends of the version  of storage system), so Where I could find any documentation to do this upgrade or by Navisphere or by Unisphere?.

I think that the procedure should'n be complicate, I am thinking in create a R5 4+1 in performance pool by I haven't very clear how have to proceed. Is there anybody that can help me please?

Best Regards

Long term, you should also be aware;

EMC has decided to discontinue support of, Celerra NS120, NS480 or NS960 Arrays effective December 31, 2016, so that EMC may concentrate its efforts on current technology.

we need to gather some info from the system, do you have access to it to run a couple of commands from the control station ?

Hello,

the customer has not sent me any info yet about his Celerra, by now, I only know that he manages the storage system with Celerra Manager, so it has a version less than 8.0 so I think we can not use the Unisphere software.

I don't know if there is any documentation to do the upgrade of the file pools and file system by console manager, so if you have, I would like that you share it with me please.

Other doubt is about the new storage, I mean, the customer use CIFs to share the filesystem, I think that when we´ll install the new disks, the customer has not to do anything to recognize or to see the disk extended with the new capacity, right?

do you at least know what code is currently running on the box ? it's possible the code currently running on the box may not support your new drives.

No yet, I sent the commands you sent me but I haven't any answer. I am trying connect remotly to the storage system, I don't know if this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon. The customer doesn't want execute any commands, I have to do it. I hope to can connect this afternoon.

The PN of the disks is: 118032689-A02 from EMC, so I think that this is compatible with the storage system,

One doubt, Is it mandatory that the customer has installed the Navisphere Manager or Express to assign the luns to the celerra? or Is sufficient with Celerra Manager to add storage to the pool files?

there are so many variables (code level, pool configuration) ..it's hard to guess at this point.

Hello,

I have just connected to the storage system. The customer has:

File versión 6.0.55-3

CX4-120: .4.30.000.5.524,7.30.15(0.44)

And the software to connect to it is by Unisphere. With it, we can use the "Disk Provisioning wizard" to add the new storage to the pool.

The customer has two pools:

clar_r5_economy Raid 5 8plus1

clar_r5_performance Raid 5 4plus1

I have 5 disks, so I will create with the wizard one R5 4+1, and I will assign all the space to the clar_r5_performance.

Now, the customer has installed 23 disks and every of them are the same type, 450G as the disks I am going to install, but I don't understand if the disks are the same type why the customer has configured two differents pools.

Anyway, I have read about the best practices and at the end I am going to add more space to the performance pool.

The customer has 5 file systems, 3 of them are configured over performance pool and the other two filesystems over economy, so my doubt now is if I add more space to the performance pool, Could extend the filesystems that were created over economy pool?, I mean, Could I use the performance pool to extend the file systems created over economy pool?

Thank you very much for your attention.

you can but it's not per best practices to span pools with different performance/protection characteristics.

ok thank you very much for yours advices, I think that I have to use this performance pool for every file system because every of them are at 99% of your capacity so I'm afraid, that I have not other solution.

how about migrating fs from one pool to the other so you have spare capacity on both pools after you have expanded one pool, this way you do not have to span pools. You can use nas_replicate with the internal interconnect to migrate the fs.

thanks castleknock,

I am not going to migrate anything, I am only going to add more disks to the celerra to add more capacity to the storage system and to extend the file systems because the customer has every fs at 99 - 98% of the capacity

Thank you very much for your help
