M6220 Ethernet Module not detected by Windows.

Hi..

We have recently received shipment of M1000e chassis along with M600 blade servers, unfortunately chassis was shipped without any network modules. Till we get the another shipment of missing network modules and just to complete the installation and keep the blade servers ready, we used two Pass through modules and two PowerConnect M6220 Ethernet modules from another standby MD1000e chassis.

We installed Windows 2003 Enterprise edition on one of the blade servers, everything was working fine but we found some issue with network interfaces. We have total four network modules installed in MD1000e chassis, but after installing windows, we can see only two Pass through network interfaces in Windows Network Connecton.  PowerConnect M6220 Ethernet modules are not visible. We also tried checking Device Manager in windows and BIOS, but even in Device Manager and  BIOS we can only see two network interfaces.

To verify if Network modules are working fine, we checked MD1000e CMC console. All the I/O modules are marked as healthy, we can see all four installed network modules in CMC.

To make sure if the blade server was not faulty, and there are no drivers issue, we installed Windows 2003 Standard on another blade server, but same results, only two network interfaces are visible.

M600 Blade servers which are recently shipped are running BIOS Version 2.1.4, we also tried installing these blades on standby MD1000e chassis, but same result, only two network interfaces were visible. M600 blades in standby chassis are running BIOS Version 2.0.4 and they work fine, all four network interfaces are visible in Windows as well as in BIOS.

Please find attached snapshot of M600 BIOS V2.0.4 and M600 BIOS V2.1.4, we are not sure if its BIOS version issue or something else.

We couldn't find any similar issue on the forum and right now not sure what could be the exact issue.

Please give your suggestions, so we can resolve this issue.

Hi Snehalkumar,

Thanking for sharing your screenshots of your BIOS screens.

It's definitely not a BIOS issue. It's simply because your M600 with the v2.1.4 does not have an I/O daughter card in its Mezzanine card slot. If you open, up the two M600s, you should see that the one with BIOS v2.0.4 should have a dual-port Broadcom NIC daughter card in one of its Mezz card slot while the M600 with BIOS v2.1.4 should have both Mezz card slots unpopulated. If that is not the case, you may have a bad I/O daughter card or the daughter card might not be properly seeded.

Please refer to page 211 of the M600 system guide to see where the Mezz card slots are on the system board: support.dell.com/.../W002C0D.pdf

In order to get the additional NIC ports, you will have to add NIC daughter cards to the Mezz card slots. The supported IO Mezz cards supported by the M600 are listed here: www.dell.com/.../pd under the I/O Mezzaine Card Options.

Regards,

KongY
