M1000e Fans at Full Speed

During a recent addition of 8 x M420 servers to a M1000e with 11 x M720HD's. The M420 idraqs firmware was updated, the M1000e cooling fans started to run at 8000+ rpm, the CMC's are running version 4.31 and the idraq for the M420 were updated was to 1.40.40 but have been rollback to 1.30.30.

From documentation it states the fans will run full speed during idraq updates and if the update does not complete successfully then the fans will remain at full speed. All updates were successful and all Idraqs worked after the update to 1.40.40 but the fans did not slow down, a rollback was performed to try resolve the issue.

All idraq's have been reset and still no decrease in fan speed. The dracs have been disable and idrac ip addresses deleted

No logs appear to show any issues, is there any way to determine which card may be causing the fans to run at full speed or a way to reset the fans.

An update to 4.5 is planned but awaiting some confirmation on what is causing the fans to run fast.

Hi Mark,

I tried to ask around for you here at Dell (I work at Dell), but I don't think we're able to give you an answer unless we have more info.  It might be related to either the iDRAC, CMC, or IO module.

We can't be certain unless we have a CMC dumplog.  Getting a dumplog can be accomplished by the following steps, originally published in http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/19489279.aspx - I'll private message you and you can email me the logs.

Step 1 – Download and Install PUTTY

You can download PUTTY from: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

Step 2 – Use PUTTY to collect the logs

Run PUTTY and enable logging:

 Connect to the CMC:

 Run the following commands:

 racdump

dumplogs

Exit the telnet session, contact support  and send the .log file to Dell.
