m1000e cmc sd card failure

Hi,

We have several m1000e chassis and on one chassis both cmcs shows no feature cards inserted, but blue dell sd cards are present on both cmcs. I tried different sd card but this card is not extended feature and cmcs shows something like unsupported media. Also, we tried dell blue sd cards in pc and it seems that cards are ok. How we can resolve this issue/bug?

Regards

Hi,

Is there a Dell PN# on the SD Card? And do you have a screenshot of the mentioned cmc showing no feature card inserted?

Hi,

Could you try formatting the SD card on your system, to FAT32 and test it?

Alternative, try the card on other CMC or any other CMC SD card from other system you could test it on this CMC which you are having issue on.

First partition i can format but cannot delete it, second partition (raw) i can delete but i cannot format.

On one card on first partition is:

04.12.2011. 10:32 304 pwwn_mac.enc
04.12.2011. 10:32 300 pwwn_mac.xml
04.12.2011. 10:32 320 pwwn_mac_ext.enc
04.12.2011. 10:32 309 pwwn_mac_ext.xml
24.10.2011. 21:28 1.899 README.txt
24.10.2011. 21:28 11 version.txt

and on other this partition is empty.

I tried formating, erasing, deleting partitions etc. and whatever i do system shows no feature card.

racadmin shows:

$ feature -s
Feature Name = FlexAddress
Date/time Activated = 04 Dec 2011 - 11:32:12
Feature installed from SD-card serial number = CN0H871T137401AM009KA00

Feature Name = FlexAddressPlus
Date/time Activated = 04 Dec 2011 - 11:32:12

What firmware revision is the CMC on? Would you be able to SSH into the CMC and restart the controller? Similar to restarting an iDRAC, restarting the CMC may help with reporting.

Hi,

Firmware is 6.21 (i think latest). I tried to reset controller (racadm racreset) and result is failover to standby cmc. I  tried this several times and no change.

Hi,

It's weird that both the SD has the same PPID detected. Do you any other CMC SD card to test?

Try Chassis Controller>Flash Media>Configuration>Repair Active Controller Media in the CMC Web interface. Repairing is only allowed on the SD card of the primary CMC.

Else, in RACADM, try:

racadm feature -d -c extendedstorage
racadm feature -r -c extendedstorage

Hi,

In web interface is no option to repair sd card, drop down with choose usage in no other options.

Racadm output:

Welcome to PowerEdge M1000e CMC firmware version 6.21

$ racadm feature -d -c extendedstorage
ERROR: ExtendedStorage: The feature is not active on the chassis
$ racadm feature -r -c extendedstorage
ERROR: No feature card inserted
$

After cmc failover situation is same.

I tried different sd card (16 Gb from dell m630 server, not idrac or cmc one) and cmc recognize card but says that is not feature sard.

Regards.

Hi,

Try this:

$ racadm feature -d -c flexaddress (Deactivate the SD card)

$ racadm feature -s

It should show

FlexAddress : The feature is not active on the chassis

FlexAddressPlus : The feature is not active on the chassis

ExtendedStorage : The feature is not active on the chassis

Then power cycle the chassis. Check if 0H871T is installed on the active CMC module or passive module.

Do another  $ racadm feature -s to see if the ExtendedStorage feature is active.

Sorry for delay,

When I try this I get an answer that chassis is powered on:

ERROR: Unable to deactivate the feature because the chassis is powered ON

Because this is production system i can not power off without an announcement and because the situation with corona i can not plan this.

Regards.

Hi,

Same problem for me. ExtendedStorage feture doesn't get activated/bound.

My SD card PN is 0R13HY

I tried "racadm feature -d -c ExtendedStorage" then tried repairing with "racadm feature -r -c ExtendedStorage" but got an error:

The ExtendedStorage feature must be disabled first. Please disable using:
racadm feature -d -c ExtendedStorage
ERROR: Unable to perform requested operation.

This error is not true as I deactivated before successfully.

FlexAdressPlus, FlexAddress fetures are activating and getting bound but not the ExtendedStorage

feturecard -s:
The feature card contains the following feature(s)
FlexAddress: bound
FlexAddressPlus: bound
ExtendedStorage: not bound

feture -s:

Feature Name = FlexAddress
Date/time Activated = ...
Feature installed from SD-card serial number = ...

Feature Name = FlexAddressPlus
Date/time Activated = ...
Feature installed from SD-card serial number = ...

ExtendedStorage : The feature is not active on the chassis

Tried also deactivating everything on the SD card and the chassis and power cycle the chassis but no luck.

Hi @noyee83,

By mean of having the same issue, you're referring to CMC UI showing " no feature cards inserted"?

Did you had a CMC replacement before this issue happened?

What is the CMC firmware version?

Do you have an active contract for the M1000e?

Are both CMC SD having the same PN#?

Hi Joey,

CMC is showing for both cards "not in use". I tried repair option from CMC UI but when it says completed (which happens fast) still remain in "Not in use" mode.

No CMC was replaced.

Cards were bought off eBay which were brand new but newer used. They are old stock and I was wondering if format on SD cards are too old and CMC version is too new?!

CMC version is 6.21 at the moment.

Unfortunately we don't have contract at the moment for M1000e.

Both SD cards are the same PN.

I however managed to sort them out over the weekend by downgrading CMC to version 5 then to version 4.50
Version 4.50 had "racadm feature" switches -a, -1, -2 and also behaved differently in UI which managed to activate ExtendedStorage features and then I upgraded CMC back to 5 then back to 6.21
Looks like all major version 5 and 6 lost the ability to activate new SD cards like mine.

Hello noyee83,

I've checked Part Number of SD card, you shared previously, it is compatible with chassis. Before installing the SD card into the CMC module, did you verify the write protection latch is in the unlock position?

Did you follow this steps, when you replaced SD cards:

https://dell.to/3FCO0fH

Please ask me, if you have any questions.

Hi Maria,

Yes I had the write protection OFF and installed it in exactly the same way as the article says that you linked (I used the same article at the time).

As I said earlier in the post that these SD cards were very old and I plugged them into a computer to see what is on them and plugged them in again after I managed to fix them and the structure has changed! Looks like only CMC version 4.5 is the only one that could activate the extended storage feature. Once it got activated I could upgrade CMC to the latest 6.21.
Now it is working fine. I can deactivate and reactivate with version 6.21.

Pal
