Fiber connectivity on M1000e with 1 Gbps FC SAN and 8 Gbps FC SAN

Hi,
I have some questions regarding Fiber connectivity with a PowerEdge M1000e system.
We are willing to install 2xM1000e with 2 SANs (8 Gbps FC), for virtualization.
For a few months, the M1000e will have to access also to a 1Gbps FC SAN in addition to the new SANs.
We were thinking of Brocade M5424 FC switches modules, supporting 8/4/2/1 Gbps,
M710 blade servers with one FC card each. (for the moment 2 blades per M1000e).

First question :
- Will an external connection OldSAN -> Brocade M5424, running at 1Gbps, would work correctly with an internal Brocade M5424 -> Blade server with QLogic FC card 8/4/2 Gbps
- Which card to choose for the blade servers : 8/4/2Gbps (Qlogic 2572 or Emulex 1205), 4/2/1Gbps (Qlogic 2472 or Emulex 1105)

Thanks,
Matthieu

Hi Matthieu,

1. My understanding of FC is that 1GFC-8GFC should all be backwards compatible since 1GFC-8GFC all use 8b/10b encoding.

2. Because of (1), you could choose any of those cards. However, since you will have 8GFC SANs, the Qlogic 2572 and Emulex 1205 in your blade servers can provide end-to-end 8Gbps IO when combined with the Brocade M5424.

Please let us know how it goes Matthieu.

We are going for Brocade M5424 and Qlogic 2572.
Now we are waiting for the customer approval, *cross fingers*.

Matthieu
