Windows registry restore

Can someone please tell me if it is possible to restore a Windows registry from an Avamar backup and the procedure to do so if this is possible?

Thanks

Windows registry consists of multiple files, so some knowledge is required.

With image based (VM) backup you can use Granular (File-Level) Restore to recover Windows Registry hive files from \windows\system32\config folder. Users' registry hives are located in the users' home folder.

Because you cannot replace the Registry files on the fly as they are in use, and File-Level Restore requires the VM to be turned on - you would need to restore the registry files to a temporary location and either booting to Command Line or using Linux boot disk you'd need to copy the files to proper folder. Or mounting the drive in another VM.

If you are using Avamar Client for backups, you can restore the System State from a VSS backup, although this process probably also restores the whole C: drive. The VSS restore process allows restoring to a different location but I haven't tried VSS online restores so don't know how that would work.
