m15 R1, upgrading ram speed to 3200 MHz?

Hi,

I am using a 2019 Alienware m15 R1 with 8GB of ram and i7 9th gen CPU. I wanted to upgrade my ram speed from 2666 MHz to 3200 MHz. Will my motherboard support this 3200 MHz upgrade?

thanks

If you install 3200 RAM the system will downclock it to 2666. For that reason it really does not make much sense to replace the RAM. You did not specify the CPU in your system but in general the 8th and 9th gen CPUs limit the RAM speed to 2666.

Hi @Samannay welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Dell (10/24/2018) support for Alienware m15 (R1) says it has been tested for 32GB installation of DDR4-2660.

The more recent Crucial System Advisor database says the Alienware m15 will accept 32GB of DDR4-3200. Alienware Alienware m15 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com.

As JOcean says, you can use 3200 MHz RAM, but it will likely downclock (run more slowly to maximum your system supports) to 2666 MHz. Much depends on what processor you have. I looked up two of the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 processors, and Intel says they support RAM to maximum 2666 MHz.

If you state your processor (specific model, e.g. Intel Core i7-9700E), I can look up Intel's specs for it, but so far it seems your RAM will run to maximum of 2666 MHz.

Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. It's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard. (Repeatedly touching a metal case part is not sufficient mitigation with modern components.)
