17 R3, battery issues, out of ideas
Hey hey.
I have seen that this can be an issue with these laptops. I have tried everything I could find online and am now out of ideas. I'll try and detail the issue and the steps taken below.
Bios lists the battery as: 'This battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced'
After about 20 seconds this entry in the bios changes to 'Non-Dell Battery'
On boot I have a black screen that reads: Your battery has experienced failure and needs to be replaced. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup utility'
The next prompt reads 'WARNING: The battery cannot be identified. The system will be unable to charge this battery. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility'
Once in windows on mains power my battery in the bottom right reads as 255% available (Plugged in)
WHAT I HAVE TRIED.
Firstly, this is the issue I had with the 5046J Simplo 92 WHR 8 cell battery that came in the laptop. I replaced the battery with an official Dell battery and have the same issue.
I tried resetting the BIOS.
I force updated the BIOS to the latest version.
I tried clearing the flea charge from the caps by disconnecting the battery and holding the power button.
I tried a new DC jack on the laptop as mine was a little loose (long shot but worth a go)
I can't work out what the issue is unless it's something on the motherboard that I am unaware of. I can't see it being Windows as the BIOS is upset before Windows loads. Not sure why two official batteries are saying they are Non Dell Batteries.
Really just looking for any advice on what to try next if possible.

Hi @Lam47 the battery status in BIOS says it is the problem. Need more information.
Please create a Windows 10 Battery Report. You may find that this is an old battery at normal end of life health, and struggling to hold any charge.
Look at white label, beneath the square matrix, there will be a year/month date, e.g. 2021/03. Battery date should be less than six months old.
eBay protection should help you get a replacement battery or full refund, if there are any problems with the vendor.

Hey Crimsom.
One is the battery the laptop came with when I bought it new from Dell.
The other is from ebay. The seller has tens of thousands of positive feedback.
It's an official Dell battery as it is identical to the original.
I guess it could be a few years old though. As you say Dell no longer sell these.
Do you think it could be the battery still?
Thanks.

Hi @Lam47 Dell do not sell replacement batteries.
What is the source and pedigree of these replacement batteries?

Thanks Crimsom.
Interesting! The battery from ebay is from November 2017!
Last time it was used was 14/12/2020 and it has a maximum capacity then of 55,605mWh.
Soooo perhaps it's just too old to work.
What would your opinion be on a third party battery?
Thanks so much for the help and if you want to see the report let me know
Laurie.

Thanks again Crimsom.
Actually the battery is older than reported in the battery test. The sticker on the unit states 05/2015 which is older than the original!
I'm going to do as suggested and see if I can get a refund. I'm in the UK and the seller has been very helpful up to this point. Will see what they say.
And then I guess I will try a newer third party battery and see what my laptop thinks!
Thanks ever so much for the help and I will of course give you Kudos!

Hi @Lam47 this battery has been sat on the shelf too long, and its chemistry continues to degrade battery performance. This battery is very old, its polarity has reverted, it will actively reject any attempt to hold a charge. The vendor knows this, you have been supplied with a battery that is clearly not fit for purpose.
Use your eBay account to Reject this item immediately and tell the vendor why, so that eBay has a record in their system. You must tell the vendor your remedy, replacement or full refund.
We do not know in which part of the world you reside. If you live in US, try Here.
Please remember to give Kudos = thank you to this volunteer user who is not employed by Dell.

Hi @Lam47 wow that is very old and not new, it has been used in a different laptop(s). Laptop without battery, will happily function as a Desktop.

Just an update for anyone else having issues.
I bought a new third party battery on ebay.
This worked!! It does do this weird thing where once the battery hits about 50% it drops to almost nothing. But at least I get a couple of hours before this happens which is really helpful.
Thanks @crimsom for all the advice. I have accepted your solution

Hi @Lam47 thank you for sharing update.
Dell users are also reporting that the Dell Part Number DP/N on the white label is for a different battery. COVID-19 is making supply of replacement batteries problematic. Transferring a label from a different battery and tricking unsuspecting users with a false manufacture date should be reported to eBay, who can take action against these rogue traders.
Have just set our internet browser to shop in UK for OEM Original 8-cell Laptop Battery 92Wh - 6JHDV and there are many traders offering OEM Replacement Battery 6JHDV, Brand New, One Year Warranty. These should give full charge for about two years before next replacement. You do not have to tolerate problematic replacement batteries.

I have a 2015 17R3, the "6th" battery yes "6th" has just reported "This battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced"
the first 2 replacements were done by Dell techs at my home, they wouldn't sell me a battery, I since bought and replaced a battery from Dell which lasted 6 months, upon query I was told this one only had a 30day warranty, I've since had 2 from Amazon, the second a replacement after the first one failed at about 6 months, I think it's more likely a Dell fault which they conveniently back heel, of course they don't stock those batteries any more, hence Amazon, eBay etc.
Although I've been happy with other aspects of the 17R3, I would hesitate to but another Dell/Alienware. It's never been used for gaming.
Previously I had a Sony Vaio, it still had the original battery in after 5 years, albeit on a vastly reduced capacity, the only conclusion I can objectively come to from my exoerience is Dell are rubbish.

Hi @Lam47 @SIDNEYK !
Here is a replacement that guaranteed to work and last you a while.
Amazon.com: OUWEE 6JHDV Laptop Battery Compatible with Dell Alienware 17 R2 R3 P43F001 P43F002 ALW17ED-1728 2728 3728 3828 4718 4738 AW17R3-4175SLV 8342SLV 7092SLV 2136SLV 6JHCY YKWXX 05046J 14.8V 92Wh 6000mAh : Electronics
I always use OUWEE in my laptops as my old 15 R1 is still working to this day ever since I swapped the battery out for a OUWEE one back in 2019.
I also recommend discharging the laptop before installing a new one in and then leaving the laptop to fully charge instead of turning it on immediately.

Quick Tip: If your laptop has voltage / charging issues, try shutting it down, unplugging power from laptop, hold power button down for 30 seconds to do a full reset!

Thanks for your kind response, I had already ordered a new one from Amazon, I am in the UK as well.
Fitted and working, I took a warranty on the battery for £5.00 approx $7, thought it worth a try, even though the warranty may be useless, I know from past experience I will be making a claim, 7th battery since 2015.
See below.
