Alienware X51 GPU Running at 90*C+

Hi All,

Just wondering if its normal for the Alienware X51 using the AMD Radeon R9 200 Series graphics card, for the GPU to be running at 80-90*C+ when playing games.

Sometimes it reaches 95*C+, maxed out at 99*C last summer but I called support and they came out and replaced the card. The temps of the new card seemed about 10*C lower but now the new card is still running just as hot.

Just tonight playing World of Warcraft at Low graphics it's hiting 89*C.

Changed over to play Starcraft 2 and it lowerd to about 80*C

Idle now 20 minutes after gaming its at about 47*C.

Room temperature ranges from 20-30*C

Everything is running as I got it, no tweaks or anything.

Thinking is it a good idea for me to remove the sides of the case while gaming to lower the temperatures? Or is there a problem with my system in general, and if so can you guys recommend any graphics card upgrade options which run cooler and can fit into the X51.

Attached screenshot is of AMD Catalyst as I alt tab from game and screenshot quickly.

Thanks, long time Dell buyer :)
Aaron

Hi,

Try running a video card stress test using the Support Assist diagnostics tool. Follow the steps below to do this. While the test is running, it will display the GPU temperature, please confirm what is the highest temperature that it goes to.

  • Open Support Assist
  • Click on the Checkup option
  • Click run custom scan
  • Click on the AMD card
  • Select the Stress Test option

Hey,

Just finished the video stress test.

Started at about 44*C and gently raised to the 70's in the first phase of the test. Then in the 2nd it raised to 87*C, then averaged out to about 84*C in the final phases of the test.

It did the test of a space scenario in a 1024x768 window.

Hi,

Thanks for confirming this. It is going pretty high, I think it may be best to have it replaced. If your system is in warranty, send me your Service Tag in a PM for further assistance.

Yeah I think my warranty expired just after I had the card replaced last year, but this didn't fix the heating issues.

Would you be able to recommend any alternatives? Ie new graphics card which runs cooler, or should I remove the sides of the case to let the heat out?

Hi,

As long as you keep the system somewhere where it gets good airflow, It shouldn't overheat. You could also try running a CPU stress test with the Support Assist tool to check the CPU temperatures.

Hi,

Try to change fan and clean dust

Last night it was climbing to 90*C while playing "7 Days to Die" on default settings.

My computer kept pausing for 0.2s every maybe 10s, I think because the card was too hot. Then the graphics in the game started to go all *** and wire frame like. My guess is the card was struggling to process the graphics at that temperature.

I opened the side of my case, unplugged the case lighting cable and left the side of the case off, it was so *** hot inside I could probably cook an egg on the graphics card. However doing this, the temperature did not lower, room temperature was approx 30*C

Where can I find a list of compatible graphics cards for the Alienware X51? I'm not sure if I should but a cooler graphics card, or but a whole new tower and transfer the parts, or buy a whole new computer. Seems that the Alienware X51 is not compatible with Australian temperatures.

Yeah last night I was running at about 90*C.

Said stuff this and pulled off the side panel to let air in. As the side of the case was so hot to touch.

Looks clean, there's minimal dust on the CPU fan and the graphics card is only a couple months old (replaced by Dell) cause of overheating before.

If anyone else has issues with the Alienware X51 overheating. This is what I have resorted to.

Take off the side case (this alone does nothing)
But blast a fan onto the graphics card, I used a large desk fan.
My temps dropped by about 10-15*C

Room temperature 86°F? Wow. Liquid cooling alert. Starting out at 44*C? Too warm idle.

My card runs just below 70°C AAA gaming with a room temperature of 71°F (21.6°C). With a 15°F rise in room temp? IDK, AC? I run horizontal with dual AC Infinity 80mm USB fans on the GPU intake side.
There really isn't a amd radeon r9 290 nvidia equivalent, and I cannot recommend the 970. Yeah, it works for me, however I choke it down, take it easy, and know how to make it work. Others, not so much.

Yeah I run aircon, but it's kinda *** as it's in the next room.

I might try lay it on its side, I just wasn't sure as I just stood it up to have the alien head the right way up.

Where you have your USB intake fans. I would have the desk, so I guess there's limited air coming into the graphics card intake, I will try put it on its side and see if that goes any better

Thanks
