Alienware R4 Screen Upgrade Possible?

So i have an Alienware 17 R4 GTX 1070 with a I7 6500 processor, I have a FHD screen and was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the screen resolution, i know there is something between what i have and the 4k screen, but i hear it is not available anymore. But just wondering if a screen upgrade is possible, thanks

Gotcha, I have replaced a screen on an older generation alienware before, so I am familiar with how to do it. But on older generations it was not possible to move a 768 screen to a 1080 screen because it would not run 1080 native. I think maybe the pins might have been different too but don't remember. I have read that the 17 r4 has 3 available screens, 1080, 4k, and a resolution that is in between those two but don't remember what it was. All third party screen dealers I have come across do not have anything in Stock besides the 1080 screen. I was just curious if I could upgrade the screen and benefit from it with my setup. If it really is possible I don't think I would do full 4k but maybe the step down from that and the step up from 1080 if it truly does exist. Thank you.

Hi prometheusx17‌,

It is possible but it is a quite complex process. We recommend not to do it, but you can always search for others who have done the upgrade/change and have guides online.

It is possible but you will need a different eDP cable (this connects the LCD to the motherboard); the 1080p eDP cable that came with your 17r4 will not work.  I did a few 17r3 1080p to 4k upgrades.  The 17r4 also uses a different length cable than the 17r3.  Unfortunately, while the 17r3 eDP cables are readily available, the 17r4 eDP cables are not.   As for the 4k 17.3" panels, these are readily available from $80 to $100.  You can use the same panel that was used in the 17r3 or precision m7710.

Forgive me, I am very new to the laptop screen upgrades. I also want to upgrade my FHD (1920x1080) screen to a QHD (2540x1440) but i am having a hard time working out what I need to get this done. I know (or i think i know) that the FHD screen is a 30 pin eDP but I that is all i seem to know.

Dell tells me a upgrade is possible but their price is stupid high. all i want to know is how do I do it myself.
