XPS 8700, upgrade processor

A lot of the newer games require an Intel Core i7-6770 processor or better it seems. My XPS 8700 has a Intel Core i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz. Was wondering can I put a Intel Core i7-6770 in my current XPS 8700?

what game is that? wow, so limited.

no.

the motherboard here, is Z87 chip set, intel, and this is its base limit, what It can support and what dell supports.

a 2013 era chip. intel limited to (not dell) i7-4790K  this is the hardware limit,

it does only generation 4 CPU, (intel gen) ok>

i7-4790   (the 4 means generation 4)

so 5 up is , impossible.  even the pin count (package) fails.

the spec, is here. dell

Welcome to the Dell Community  @Wispr

You are at the top of the line with the i7-4790.

The Core i7-4790 is based on Haswell core, and it uses Socket 1150.

There are also 77 Haswell processors, that work in the same socket.

@Wispr

Looking at it a little longer your other option could be to upgrade/downgrade to the i7-4770K???

It has a 98% success rate, the same "TDP" and "Steppings"

It is "Unlocked" and can utilize (Intel® XTU)

Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility:

But I am not sure if it would improve your requirements for gaming??

You can use a 4790K in an 8700.  But only a 13% improvement over 4790.  I use OC2 in the BIOS settings on mine for a touch of overclocking.

I could not use the Intel Tuning utility on my 8700.  Tried, but did not succeed.

"Core i7-6770" requirement is based on the bare minimum INTEL GPU.

Iris Pro graphics is needed if you don't have a GPU.

If you add a GTX 1060 6 gig card your current cpu will work with all games AND with VR.

GTX 1060 6GB is a great choice and works with the stock PSU.  Not nearly as pricey as a 1080Ti.

Better upgrade than the 4790K.

I picked up a used one on ebay for not too many $$$.  Was using that before going up to the 1080Ti and PSU.
